The Scorned Heiress's Hidden Empire (by Jade Quinn) novel Chapter 316

The hospital room was quiet.

She closed her eyes again. Then she heard the door open, followed by the sound of light footsteps. She thought William was back.

“I don’t want to stay in the hospital anymore. I want to go home and sleep.”

She knew William would say yes. Even if he had to move the entire hospital into her house, he would still let her go home.

She had just started to turn over when the blanket was suddenly pulled back.

One warm hand settled against her back. The other slid beneath her knees.

William was having a hard enough time walking on his own right now. There was no way he could carry her. So this wasn’t William.

She looked up and, without warning, found herself staring into a pair of dark, unreadable eyes.

Winter’s body went rigid. Her face turned cold, and the anger and rejection in her eyes were impossible to miss.

She had only been thrown off for a split second by seeing him there. The next moment, she raised her hand and struck at him without hesitation.

But he was faster. The instant she moved, he caught her wrist. He didn’t seem to use much force, yet she could neither yank herself free nor land the blow.

Chris lowered his eyes to her pale face, his gaze dark and unreadable. “Why are you in the hospital?”

“What does it have to do with you?” she said flatly.

Zion had clearly been guarding the door, yet Chris had walked into her room as if no one could stop him.

Most likely Zion had been pinned down by Gavin again.

“I asked what’s wrong with you.” Chris’s gaze slowly dropped to her lips, which were drained of color.

Her lips were usually naturally rosy. They only went pale when she felt truly awful.

A flicker of anger finally broke through her blank expression. Without thinking, she snapped, “The sight of you makes me sick, so get out of here right now.”

The second the words left her mouth, she tried to slap him with her other hand.

Chris caught her easily. His callused fingers closed around her slender wrist, and his low voice carried a trace of irritation. “Trying to hit me the second you see me?”

How could he say that so casually?

He was the one who had lied to her first. He was the one who had hurt her first. And yet he could still talk to her as if he had the right, as if there were still something between them.

“The fact that I haven’t stabbed you is already me showing restraint!” A moment ago, her chest had still felt tight and miserable, but the instant she saw Chris, all of it was drowned out by anger, leaving nothing behind except pure fury.

Mrs. Xander Sr. had been wrong. When she felt awful, she really could look for Chris. He wasn’t a doctor, but in some ways, he worked faster than one.

We’re not together anymore, so why do you keep showing up in front of me? Don’t tell me this pathetic clinging means you regret it now.”
