Seeing how much weight Winter had lost, and knowing what had happened between her and Chris, Mr. Simmons Sr. sighed.

“You’ve been through a lot, Winnie. Get some rest and focus on getting your strength back. That matters more than anything right now. I brought you some soup. Go back to your room and have it while it’s still warm.

Winter nodded, making an effort to put some expression on her face.

“Thank you, Grandpa.”

“You!”

The next second, Mr. Simmons Sr. turned and fixed his gaze on Chris. His attitude changed completely.

“Get in here.”

Chris didn’t let go of Winter’s hand. He only lifted his eyes lazily.

“Wait. I’m taking her back first.”

After saying that, he gave Mr. Simmons Sr. no chance to respond and led Winter toward her room by the hand.

Sure enough, there was a thermal food jar beside the hospital bed.

After Chris helped Winter sit down, he unscrewed the lid, ladled out a small bowl of soup, and stirred it a few times with the spoon to make sure it wasn’t too hot before handing it to her.

Then he sat down in the chair beside the bed and watched her drink.

She was so quiet.

Even as she drank the soup, she barely made a sound.

She was calm and obedient, not making a fuss at all, but she was nothing like the Winter he remembered.

Seeing her like this made Chris’s chest feel painfully tight, as if something were stuck there and he had nowhere to release it.

When she lowered the spoon into the bowl, he pulled out a tissue and gently wiped the soup from the corner of her mouth.

“The doctor said you can be discharged and recover somewhere quiet, but I figured you’d rather stay at the hospital with Richie, so I didn’t go through with the discharge paperwork.”

Winter nodded silently.

Chris’s hand tightened slightly.

Then he heard her say, “Grandpa is waiting for you.”

She didn’t lift her head. She didn’t even look at him.

But Chris showed no intention of leaving.

Seeing that the bowl of soup was empty, he took it from her hand and ladled out another half bowl. “He has nothing better to do anyway.”
