As she spoke, Wendy pulled a cup of yogurt from her bag and placed it between Gavin’s crossed arms.

“Here. This is for you. I’m not looking for free.”

The yogurt had just come from the grocery store. It had been sitting in the refrigerated section, so it was

still cold to the touch.

Gavin’s arms were crossed over his chest, and the cup landed right where his forearms overlapped. The cold seeped through his shirt.

“I don’t eat that kind of thing.”

He lowered his arms, and the yogurt slid down along his forearm before he caught it easily in his hand.

But Wendy had clearly decided this was a take–it–or–leave–it situation. After giving it to him, she ignored him and kept walking toward Winter’s room.

Gavin lightly squeezed the cup of yogurt. His expression didn’t change, but his dark brown eyes followed the long waves of Wendy’s hair as they swayed behind her.

Then, all of a sudden, the bag in Wendy’s hand rustled.

The plastic crinkled.

The cup of yogurt was back in the bag.

Wendy turned around and looked at Gavin, who was standing more than ten feet away.

He had actually tossed the yogurt straight into her bag.

And with perfect aim.

Meeting her surprised gaze, Gavin said without changing expression, “Eat it yourself.”

For some reason, Wendy felt a strange tingle in her chest.

She turned around with the bags and hurried into Winter’s room.

Winter had just finished her soup when she looked up and saw Wendy rushing in with an armful of things.

“I need to ask you something.”

Wendy set the grocery bags on the table first, then sat down beside Winter. She took the empty bowl from Winter’s hand, placed it on the table, and pulled out a tissue for her.

Winter slowly wiped her mouth.

Ever since Winter had gotten sick, Wendy had tried not to treat her like a patient. She still talked to her the way she always had.
