The Second Chance Of The Rejected Moon (Celine and Bastian) novel Chapter 10

Chapter 10

1 see resentment in my girl’s eyes. And I like it more than I should.

“Alpha Blackwood.” She greets him politely, though without warmth. “What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to know how you were doing. I heard you were attacked last night.” He takes a step toward her, and Celine immediately steps back.

I can’t help smiling. Everything in her expression shows a rather obvious rejection.

“I’m fine. My mate found me in the forest just in time, alpha. He didn’t reject me or throw a bag of gold at my feet as compensation. He brought me home safely.”

My eyebrows lift in surprise. I never would have imagined that Celine, so reserved and cautious, would answer an alpha like that.

“I want to apologize for that, Celine.” Tanner’s voice comes out broken.

“I accepted your rejection, and now I accept your apology, Alpha Blackwood.” Celine’s voice is firm, without a trace of fear. “Now, with your permission, my mate and I will take our leave.”

Zack rolls around, satisfied, somewhere inside my mind.

“We didn’t make a mistake with her.”

“No, we didn’t,” I reply to Zack.

Celine takes my hand and I, keeping my emotions under control, lead her out of the hospital. Outside, the vehicles are already prepared for our second stop: the village near the forest.

Celine, my mate destined by the Moon Goddess, is full of surprises.

Thank the Goddess.

Celine.

I’m not entirely sure what Tanner and Bastian talked about while I was visiting Delta Thomas. The smell of medicine and disinfectant still clings to my nose. What I do know is that they had a small conversation that made my former mate uncomfortable. For the first time in my life, I have someone backing me up and, from the little I know about Bastian, he doesn’t have much patience when it comes to dealing with idiots.

I’ve just discovered that neither do I.

Everything came rushing back to me when I saw him standing behind Bastian. His scent, the pull in my chest when I realized we were bonded and that I had found my mate. It turned out he was in the pack because of my sister, not me. When he looked at me, the disgust in his eyes told me everything. He was going to reject me and, honestly, at that moment, it was the thing I cared about the least. My grandmother had just died and there was no room in my mind for anything else. The pain still sits in my chest like an unbearable weight.

Either way, it was something I was used to. My father, my brother, my sister, her mother.

What could I have done to stop him from rejecting me? The bastard spent the entire time watching through the window, and I’m sure he saw the way Cassius hit me and dragged me back inside the house. I can still remember the sharp pain in my scalp and the metallic taste of blood in my mouth.

He did nothing to defend me.

Then came the rejection.

When Tanner rejected me and I told him I was Darius’s daughter, he still didn’t take it back. He threw a small pouch with a few gold coins at my feet, as if that were enough to pay for the pain. The sound of the coins hitting the floor still leaves a bitter feeling in my stomach.

I didn’t take it. I walked away with the shattered pieces of my heart without looking back. That’s why, when I saw him again, the only thing I could feel was resentment.

“What are you thinking about so much?” Bastian’s deep voice pulls me from my thoughts. “Are you upset?

We’re very close to the village on the outskirts of the pack, and I’m sitting beside him while he drives. The vehicle move along the damp dirt road while the trees sway slowly under the cold afternoon wind. Bastian’s cedar and mint scent fills the inside of the truck.

“Nothing. I’m just tired.”

Bastian doesn’t take his eyes off the road, but he frowns and grips the steering wheel as if he wants to break it. White knuckles, tense jaw.

He knows I’m lying.

“I don’t like being lied to, Celine.” I stare out the window to avoid his dark gaze fixed on me. “I also don’t like having things hidden from me. If you have something to say, just say it and we’ll deal with it together.”
