Chapter 106

She smiles with the same calmness that seems to follow her everywhere and takes my hand between hers once again. Her fingers are warm, her thumb absentmindedly stroking my skin as though she wants to reassure me before she begins.

“I was a girl just like you. Young, pretty, and innocent when I arrived at this castle. I didn’t come from a noble family, much less a wealthy one. I was an ordinary young woman who lived on the outskirts of the kingdom. I never imagined I would one day become queen.”

My eyes widen slightly in surprise.

I’d always assumed Sonia belonged to one of the most important families in the Thorn Kingdom. It’s hard to imagine al woman with such elegance and such presence having grown up far from the nobility.

Then I remember Amelie.

Bastian’s mother wasn’t born into luxury either. She came from a small village in the south of the kingdom, a place where hard work and hardship were plentiful, but comfort certainly wasn’t.

Maybe, in this family, crowns were never about last names.

“I didn’t come from a noble family either.” I lower my gaze for a few seconds before meeting her eyes again. “I’m just an ordinary she-wolf… one rejected by her own family.”

The words leave my lips more easily than I’d expected.

Sonia stops smiling.

The warmth in her expression slowly fades, and a flash of deep sadness crosses her eyes. She squeezes my hand a little tighter between hers, as though she truly regrets everything I had to endure.

“I know.”

Her voice is barely above a whisper.

“But you’re not an ordinary she-wolf, Celine. And you know that too.”

She pauses briefly, never looking away from me.

“My grandson was incredibly fortunate to find a woman like you. A woman with a bloodline that hasn’t been seen on this continent in thousands of years. Don’t let the rejection of those who failed to see your worth make you forget who you truly are. Because even if you don’t fully believe it yet… you were born to change many things in this world.”

“My mother died giving birth to me. My father blamed me for her death and hid me from the world, from my own pack. When I grew older, he made me work in the main house like just another servant. My brother, Cassius, seeing how I was treated, chose to stand beside my father in that irrational hatred, and it stayed that way for years, until he remarried and had another daughter. One he truly loved and treated like a real daughter.”
