Chapter 122
‘Hello, beautiful.”
The voice inside my mind is Bastian’s.
But it isn’t Bastian speaking to me.
The chill that races through my body has nothing to do with fear of the attack. It comes from realizing that the damned warlock is using our bond to communicate with me. Before I can react, he hurls the sphere at me. I dive aside, throwing myself against the wall for cover as the energy crashes into the spot where I was standing only a second earlier.
Rufus isn’t as lucky.
The sphere strikes him head-on, and he collapses to the floor after taking the full force of the blast, unconscious. I squeeze my eyes shut and desperately try to reach Magnus, Alaric, anyone who can hear me, but it’s impossible. The warlock-is interfering with our connection. I’m not an ordinary she-wolf. I know I should be able to do it, but something is blocking every attempt.
“You don’t want the prince, do you?” I ask as I reach Rufus’s foot and drag him into the safety of the wall. I kneel beside him and check his pulse. He’s alive, just unconscious.
“Exactly, you little bitch.”
Beatriz’s voice, dripping with rage, confirms my suspicions.
She knew I’d follow them.
“Fine. Just don’t hurt him. I’ll go with you if you promise the warlock won’t attack me again.”
The man’s sinister laugh echoes through the hallway.
“I won’t attack you if you behave yourself, Celine. My friends and I need something from you, and until you give us what we want, your little prince isn’t going anywhere.”
“What do you want?”
I take a slow breath, and even though every instinct in my body is screaming that it’s a trap, I leave the safety of the wall and walk into the room. I don’t trust his word, but Bastian is in there, and I’m not leaving him alone.
I run to him and drop to my knees at his side.
He’s breathing.
The relief lasts only a second, because although he’s unconscious, he’s still alive.
“Tell me what you want, and I’ll give it to you.”
I don’t address the Millers.
Not after everything they’ve done.
My attention remains fixed on the warlock, because he’s the one who’s truly in control of this situation.
Before he can answer, Anne moves.
Her hands tangle in my hair, and she yanks me away from Bastian with all her strength. I don’t even have time to react before her foot slams into my ribs, driving the air from my lungs in a burst of pain.
“You and I have unfinished business, bitch.” Her voice is filled with hatred. “My mate rejected me because of you!
i hear her breathing with rage as I struggle to catch my breath.
There is no sadness in her voice.
No grief over losing the man she was supposed to spend her life with.
Only fury because someone took away something she believed belonged to her.
But Anne never takes another step.
The atmosphere changes.
I don’t know how to explain it, but my body feels it before my eyes can understand it.
The energy in the room grows heavier, as though something invisible has taken control of every corner. Even Astra goes on alert inside me, watching the man who, until now, had remained silent.
Before Anne can attack me again, I make Astra retreat, and my body returns to its human form.
The warlock raises one hand with absolute calm.
There isn’t the slightest effort on his face.
