The demon takes a step back without trying to touch the swords again and turns his attention to the older man seated beside Ciro.
“Mr. Arman, where did you get that sword before giving it to your lovely daughter-in-law?”
Arman remains silent for a few moments before answering.
“It has belonged to our family for centuries. Since it wasn’t a curved sword, I thought it would make a fitting welcome gift for Valeria when she became part of the family.”
Zharzel nods slowly before turning back to me.
“And you, doll? Where did you find the other one?”
“In the castle’s training hall, in Lemuria. No one could lift it, so it had been abandoned on a display shelf for years. But sho spoke to me. When my mate took her down and placed her in my hands, I was able to hold her without the slightest effort. although that wasn’t the only thing that happened that day.”
I rise to my feet, and the conversations gradually fade away. Every eye turns back to me as I scan the room, looking at each person in turn. No one speaks. Curiosity is written across every face, and silence eventually settles over the room before I speak again.
“Does anyone here have a problem with nudity?”
Several people shake their heads at the same time.
“Oh, certainly not. Please, go right ahead,” Zharzel replies with a mischievous smile,
The smack Vladimir delivers to the back of his head echoes through the room.
“Behave yourself. You’re standing in front of the future Queen Consort of a kingdom we don’t even know. And if her husband was able to lift a sword you couldn’t move so much as an inch, you’d do well to start addressing her with the respect she deserves.”
Christian and Tanner’s restrained laughter briefly breaks the tension.
I pay them no attention.
I slowly remove my sweater and take a couple of steps toward the center of the room so everyone can see the tattoos covering my back and arms. The murmuring stops immediately. Even those who had remained seated rise to their feet to get a better look at what I’m about to show them.
“I’m a young she-wolf. I’m twenty-two years old, and by the standards of my kind, I’m still little more than a pup, so I hadn’t yet been able to shift into my wolf form. It wasn’t until after my first heat that she manifested for the first time and took control of my body. That’s when the changes began. My eyes, which had always been hazel, turned blue with golden flecks in the iris. Then my hair, which had always been blonde, gradually became lighter until it reached this almost white shade on the day I touched my sword for the first time. The same thing happened with the tattoos that appeared on my left arm and across my entire back. Ever since then, Erebus hasn’t stopped whispering two names inside my mind: Idunn and Helel.”
Valeria rises from the sofa and walks a few steps closer, studying the center of my back with great attention. Her fingers hover in the air without actually touching my skin, as though she fears disturbing those markings somehow.
“So… you’re still changing. My children and I have the same mark, but I never… changed that way.”
“Yes. But when I went to retrieve my sword a little while ago, I discovered my wolf is weak. She barely managed to say one name: Zack, my mate’s wolf. I have to go home, and I know how to do it. But first I need to go to the Dark Forest and find

out whether my father and brother are really there, alive or dead, or whether they were ever there at all, where my stepmother and sister claimed they were.” I pull my sweater back on, covering the tattoos once again, before looking at Valeria. “I don’t know what your bloodline is or how diluted it’s become after so many generations, but one thing I’m absolutely certain of is this: Wolfsangel blood runs through your veins.”
“Wait. What’s the hurry? You can’t leave until we know what they did with your blood and why you don’t remember any of it. Aren’t you worried your pup may have been affected?” Valeria’s mother-in-law asks.
For the first time, I truly look at her.
Her long hair falls to her waist like a cascade of dark silk, and although she appears to be about my age, there’s something in the way she carries herself that reveals decades of experience. Her lilac eyes hold a calmness that’s difficult to explain, and unlike so many people I’ve known throughout my life, I find no judgment or distrust in them.
Only genuine concern.
For me.
And for my child.
“My child is perfectly fine, ma’am. I can feel him growing inside me this very moment, and I don’t sense anything unusual. only need to know one thing… Where is the Dark Forest?”
“It’s within this pack’s territory, sweetheart. If anyone had crossed the energy dome protecting our borders, every one of us would have known the very instant they set foot here. I can assure you that, aside from us, there’s no one in these lands who doesn’t belong to the pack.”
She gently guides me back to the chair, and I sit down again without resisting. My eyes immediately drift to the coffee table, where Erebus liés motionless beside her twin. It’s strange seeing them side by side, as though they had always belonged together.
“They lied to me…”
