The Second Chance Of The Rejected Moon

Chapter 141

1947

With heartbreaking slowness, the elderly woman raises her hand again and gently caresses her companion’s face. Her fingers barely have any strength left, but he closes his eyes for a moment and leans into her touch as if it were the greatest gift he has ever received.

“One day the goddess will bring me back. In another life… another time. And when she does, because she will, you’ll feed it..: and then you’ll come for me.”

“I’m not so sure your goddess would do that for me.”

“Wasn’t she the one who gave you those two swords? She’s watching us right now, my love. I’m not afraid of death. Just trust that one day she’ll bring me back to life.”

Without even realizing it, tears begin to slide slowly down my cheeks. I don’t make the slightest attempt to wipe them away. The knot tightening around my throat grows so painful that even breathing hurts. There’s something about the way they look at each other, about the way he clings to her while she tries to teach him how to let her go, that breaks something inside

Then it happens.

The elderly woman slowly lifts her gaze, and her eyes meet mine.

My entire body freezes.

The air leaves my lungs.

It can’t be.

I take a step back around the bed, unable to look away from her. The elderly woman follows my every movement as naturally as if she could truly see me.

“Do you promise?” he asks as the wound in his hand slowly heals. Then he lies down beside her and wraps his arms around her with the same care he would use to hold something irreplaceable.

“She may not be who I am, nor will she remember you. You’ll have to wait for her, because she’ll have a difficult life, one you can’t interfere with. Let her be happy. Let her live her life, take care of her mate, have her child, and when the time comes…. you’ll go to her.”

“I don’t understand what you’re saying.” He smiles at her again, sadness filling his eyes. “I don’t want someone like you… I want you.”

“She’ll live forever, just like you. She won’t grow old, she won’t wrinkle, and her bones will never turn to dust.”

The elderly woman never stops looking at me.

She never stops smiling at me.

“But she won’t be the woman I love.”

“She will. She’ll carry your swords. She’ll be moved the moment she sees you, and she’ll accept you, because you’ll be bound together by the will of this old woman who once loved you as though you were her entire world.”

“It’s a shame I can’t take you with me. Wolves don’t go to hell.”

Legion lets out a quiet, weary laugh and closes his eyes as he pulls her into his arms once more with infinite tenderness, as if he wanted to memorize the warmth of her body forever.

“Get some sleep, my love. Always remember that I love you… and that she’ll love you too.”

The world begins to spin again.

Everything around me blurs into a whirl of light and shadow that I can barely make out. The dizziness forces me to close my eyes for a moment, and when I open them again, I’m no longer inside that room.

Legion and his two sons stand motionless before a massive funeral pyre that still burns fiercely. The flames slowly consumé the elderly woman’s body while tiny sparks drift into the dark sky, disappearing among the snow that has begun to fall gently. Behind them, men and women abandon their human forms one after another, transforming into enormous wolves with thick coats. They’re far larger than any wolves I’ve ever seen. Imposing. Ancient. They lift their muzzles toward the night sky, and a long howl shatters the silence of the mountains, carrying across the valley like a lament no one could ignore.

They remain there for long minutes.

Then, one by one, they begin to leave.

Legion doesn’t.

He remains standing before the pyre until the fire finally burns itself out. All that’s left are ashes, glowing embers, and smoke slowly carried down the mountainside by the wind. Little by little, the horizon begins to glow with shades of orange as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the snow. The freezing air stirs Legion’s dark hair and sends his cloak rippling before, at last, he turns and starts the walk back to his home.

His sons are waiting for him in silence.

Neither of them dares to speak as he picks up the two swords and stands before them. The expression on his face alone is enough to command absolute silence.
