Chapter 153

Her fingers linger for a moment in Edgard’s hair before pulling away. Then the warmth disappears from her expression. Her smile slowly fades, and when her eyes meet mine, I see a concern that makes every muscle in my body tense.

“Did something happen?”

Karin nods slowly and glances toward the door, still standing slightly open.

“We need to talk about something important that can’t wait. Can you leave these three beautiful children playing for a little while? I’m sure they’ll behave and take care of their little brother while we talk outside.”

The seriousness in her voice sends a chill down my spine. I know that look far too well. Karin doesn’t dramatize things. If she’s come looking for me wearing that expression, it means the problem has already become too serious to ignore.

“Of course.”

I rise to my feet and look back at my children. All three are watching me silently, following my every

movement.

“Will you behave and take care of Jasper for a few minutes until I come back?”

The twins nod in unison.

I lean down to kiss the tops of their heads and straighten the blanket covering the baby one last time before following Karin out of the room. The door closes softly behind us, and the bustle of the castle surrounds us once again. But I no longer pay attention to the voices or the footsteps echoing through the corridors.

Everything inside me tells me something is terribly wrong.

Karin waits until she’s certain no one can overhear us. Then she locks eyes with me and speaks in a voice low enough for only me to hear.

“Johan is here. Larissa brought him after getting him out of the Order’s dungeons.”

I frown, unable to understand what could possibly have gone through Larissa’s mind to bring Johan to

Avalon.

“He’s a dark warlock. Why the hell would she bring him here after everything he’s done?”

Karin lets out a weary sigh before answering.

“He’s her son, and he was the Order’s prisoner. Everything he did was to protect his family. We can’t blame him for doing exactly what any of us would have done in his place.”

I shake my head.

“But if it hadn’t been for him, they never would have taken Celine’s blood to experiment on her.”

“And he paid the price. He’s… dying.”

Just then, the maid responsible for looking after my children walks down the corridor. I gesture toward the room, signaling for her to go inside. She gives a small nod before carefully opening the door and disappearing into the room. I wait until I hear it close again before turning back to Karin.

“Dying? How?”

Karin looks away for a moment. Her shoulders seem heavier than they did only seconds ago.

“The only thing he managed to tell his mother was that the Order punished him for taking Celine out of the laboratories. They never intended to honor the deal she and Johan made. From the very beginning, all they wanted was to get Celine back… and get rid of him.”

She falls silent for a few seconds.

Her lilac eyes, usually so calm, now shine with a sadness she rarely allows anyone to see. If even Larissa, one of the most powerful witches alive, hasn’t found a way to save her son, then the situation is far worse than I imagined.

Then she looks back at me.

“You can save him.”

I feel my stomach tighten.

“Me?”

Karin nods slowly.

“Your blood is special… and if you choose to give it to him, you could turn him into a hybrid.”

Even though she doesn’t say it, I know she’s asking this because of her friend.

“I can’t do that, Karin. You know exactly what that means. And it’s not just because of the bond that would be created between us, but because of what he would become. He’s not a wolf. He’s not a vampire. He’s a damn dark warlock. He’d become the first tribrid in history, and I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”

Karin holds my gaze without looking away for even a second.

“Just try. You’re a mother, Valeria. Put yourself in Larissa’s place. She was always there for you whenever you needed her.”

I clench my jaw.

“That’s a low blow, Karin… How do you think my mates will react when they find out that, under pressure, I was the one who created the first tribrid?”

Karin remains silent for a moment before answering.

“He’s Celine’s second fated mate. Did you know that?”

I roll my eyes tiredly.

Of course I knew.

She never came right out and said it, but she didn’t have to. She hinted at it. I felt it every time she spoke about him, in the doubts she tried to hide and in the fear that appeared in her eyes whenever she said his

name.

“If he changes… if he becomes a tribrid, he’ll be able to stand against whatever those monsters created in their laboratories.”
