Chapter 21
King Magnus’s laughter echoes through the enormous hall once again while Alaric watches me with obvious curiosity
“Luna Celine… had you never met a pureblood Lycan before?”
I compose myself as best as I can and my gaze moves from wolf to wolf trying to understand how the hell none of them look their actual age. When I finally go to answer Alaric, Bastian simply picks me up into his arms as if it were nothing and starts carrying me toward the exit of the hall.
“Bastian?”
“You need to rest. That was enough for today.”
“I hope the hurry you have to take her to your chambers is so you can mark her and give me grandchildren soon, son!”
My cheeks instantly burn and I hide my face against my mate’s neck while I hear Alaric laughing quietly.
“I’m dying of embarrassment.” I murmur, still feeling the heat climbing to my ears.
Bastian’s soft laugh lightly vibrates through his chest beneath my cheek.
“I told you, my father is old-fashioned. He wants grandchildren as soon as possible.”
And yes…. he did say that before.
Bastian also mentioned that he wants pups.
I worry that Bastian will explode with the same rage every time a man or wolf sets eyes on me. I saw far too many golden eyes following me tonight while we walked through the hall and, if that young wolf was right about one thing, it is that I do not carry Bastian’s mark nor have our scents fully mixed.
To the eyes and scent of any unmated male, I am still a lone she-wolf.
Goddess… what am I supposed to do?
I’m ready for his mark. Or at least I think I am. But not for the other thing. Not for completely giving myself to someone when I still feel like I’m only beginning to understand my own life.
The silence between us grows heavy while Bastian keeps carrying me through the enormous dark hallways of the castle He only holds me tighter every time a guard lowers his head as we pass.
I can feel the tension in his body even through the fabric of his suit. The stiffness in his shoulders. The way he clenches his jaw. His eyes remain dark, but the bond between us is still unsettled after what happened downstairs. Zack is not completely calm yet.
Bastian’s footsteps finally stop in front of an enormous black door decorated with silver details.
He extends one hand and slowly pushes it open before walking inside with me still in his arms.
The room is immense. Dark. Elegant. Barely illuminated by a few warm lamps beside the walls and the enormous window at the back, where the kingdom’s white lights still shine in the distance.
Bastian’s scent completely covers the room. Cedar, mint, leather, and something more intense that I now instantly recognize as entirely his.
I feel his gaze fixed on me when the door closes behind us with a dull sound.

And then he slowly lowers me.
My feet barely touch the dark carpet when he immediately steps several feet away from me, as if staying too close is dangerous.
I watch him open and close his hands several times. His fingers tremble slightly and for the first time since I met him I notice genuine effort in every breath he takes.
“Why are you moving away?” I take a small step toward him and Bastian instantly takes another back
The movement makes me stop.
Goddess.
He is truly fighting himself.
“I think it would be best if I slept somewhere else.” His voice comes out deep, far too tense while he clenches his hands into fists again. “It isn’t safe for you if I stay here one more minute.”
He slightly turns as if ready to leave and something inside my chest tightens painfully.
“I don’t want you to go.”
The words leave me before I can think about them and they make him stop halfway.
His shoulders tense slightly.
“New places scare me… especially ones as big as this chamber.”
