The question was direct and devoid of any unnecessary formality. Thomas no longer considered himself a warrior of the pack, and the presence of one of its leaders standing in front of his house filled him with a growing sense of distrust.

“Well, I’m not a Beta anymore.” Christian replied with a faint smile. “Are you going to invite me in? I need to talk to you! about a proposal.”

Thomas watched him for a few moments longer. His eyes traveled across the new Alpha’s face as though trying to discover what he was hiding. Finally, he stepped aside and allowed him to enter.

“Thank you, Thomas. What a lovely house you have.”

The interior was warm. The scent of firewood burning in the fireplace mingled with the smell of freshly brewed coffee. Everything was clean and orderly. There were no objects out of place and no signs of neglect. Every piece of furniture seemed to occupy exactly the spot where it belonged.

Christian expected at least a polite response to his comment.

He got none.

Thomas closed the door behind him and continued walking toward the living room without saying a single word.

That made Christian slightly nervous.

Not because Thomas was aggressive or troublesome, but because it was impossible to know what he was thinking. The warrior was so reserved that speaking with him sometimes felt like trying to pry information out of a stone wall.

Thomas motioned for Christian to sit down and went into the kitchen to pour two cups of hot coffee. The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee began spreading through the small house as the warrior moved quickly among the cabinets. He returned to the living room a few seconds later, took a seat across from him, and offered him one of the cups before settling into silence.

The fact that Thomas seemed willing to look at anything except Christian made him even more nervous. His eyes occasionally lingered on the window, the fireplace, or the steam rising from the dark surface of the coffee, but they rarely stayed on him for more than a few seconds.

So, not wanting to drag the matter out any longer, the Alpha cleared his throat and wrapped both hands around the warm

cup.

“You see, Thomas, I wasn’t informed about your resignation. Your letter probably ended up on my desk, and I haven’t had a chance to read it. I’ve been rather busy. But I went to the hospital, and they told me you were discharged this morning, so I decided to come personally and make you a proposal.”

Thomas took a sip of coffee and nodded without saying anything. He did not even seem surprised by the visit.

“The thing is, Thomas, you’re my best warrior. The only one capable of working at my side now that the kingdom has promoted me to Alpha of the pack.”

Christian frowned when he noticed no reaction.

No pride.

No surprise.

No curiosity.

Thomas simply continued holding the cup in his hands as though they were discussing something completely insignificant.

“I don’t understand what that has to do with me, Alpha Christian. I just told you that I resigned from my position.”

“I know, you’ve told me that, but I want you to be my Beta.”

Several minutes passed in complete silence. Thomas looked at him as though he had just said the strangest thing he had heard all week. The crackling of the fire in the fireplace seemed to fill the entire room while Christian began wondering whether he should add something else.

Finally, sensing that the silence had stretched too long, Thomas stood up, picked up the empty cups, and headed toward the

kitchen.

“I’m not interested. You may leave, Alpha Christian.”

The response was so firm that it left no room for discussion. Christian rose to his feet as well and followed him when he returned to the kitchen to wash the cups and put them away. The sound of water striking ceramic broke the silence while Thomas continued the task as though he had just declined a dinner invitation rather than the second most important position in the entire pack.

“Do you have a reason for rejecting the second most important position in the pack?”

Thomas dried his hands with a cloth and then leaned against the counter. The small kitchen seemed even smaller with him occupying part of the space. The warm light from the lamp partially illuminated his face, leaving the rest in shadow.

“I’m leaving the pack,” he replied with complete indifference. “In fact, I was about to do that when you arrived.”

The young warrior’s answer caught the Alpha completely off guard. He had expected many things, but not that Thomas intended to leave the pack.

“Where will you go? You don’t have family outside the pack.”

Thomas raised an eyebrow. It was the first visible expression Christian had seen from him during the entire conversation.

“Have you been investigating me, Alpha? How do you know I don’t have family outside the pack?”

Christian immediately regretted mentioning something so sensitive. The truth was that he had read his file and knew perfectly well that Thomas had no relatives registered in other packs. His entire family had been massacred by rogue wolves

a decade earlier.

Even so, Thomas did not seem offended. His expression remained just as calm and indifferent as before.

“I didn’t mean to offend you. I just don’t understand why you’ve decided to leave if you have nothing outside the pack.”

“I don’t have anything here either, Alpha.” He said it with unsettling casualness, as though he were commenting on the weather rather than explaining why he was leaving the place where he had lived his entire life. “I haven’t found my fated mate in this pack. That means she isn’t here, and someone has offered me a better job than the one you’re offering. I’m not going to break my word when I’ve already accepted.”

Christian stiffened.

What job could possibly be better than becoming a pack’s Beta?
