The Second Chance Of The Rejected Moon (Celine and Bastian) novel Chapter 70

Chapter 70

After receiving my orders, Jack and Thomas leave the office, and Alaric goes to fetch Alpha Christian Zack remains restless inside me. Both he and I want to be back under the blankets, with our sleeping moon in our arms

I rise from the armchair and walk over to the window. Outside, the storm continues to batter the kingdom with impressive violence. The glass vibrates with every thunderclap, and beyond it, nothing can be seen except a heavy curtain of gray fain The dark sky seems to have swallowed the landscape completely.

I clasp my hands behind my back as I watch the raindrops slide down the glass.

Even after finding my mate, my mind refuses to be at peace.

The door opens, and I turn to find Christian Caldwell.

The man stands at his full height and enters the office with quick, confident steps. The rain has left small’droplets on his shoulders, and part of his dark hair is still damp. He stops in front of the desk and gives a respectful nod.

“Alpha Caldwell, welcome to my kingdom. Please, have a seat.”

I gesture toward the armchair in front of me before returning to my own seat and placing both hands on the dark wood of the desk.

“I came here as soon as I received your telegram, Your Highness.” He doesn’t even sit down immediately. “Is everything all right with Celine? Where is she?”

It doesn’t take a genius to sense his concern.

It’s in his voice.

In the way his brows furrowed the moment he stepped inside.

In the stiffness of his shoulders.

Even in the way he remains standing, as though incapable of relaxing until he receives an answer.

The concern is genuine.

So is the guilt resting on his shoulders.

“She’s fine, Alpha. She’s still asleep. You’ll be able to see her later, if you wish.”

The tension in his shoulders cases slightly.

Only then does he sit down.

“I asked you to come urgently because I need to speak with you about your lineage.”

I decide not to mention anything related to Celine’s blood yet, nor the condition I suspect might be hiding behind that strange anomaly.

Christian’s eyes narrow.

“My lineage?”

He frowns deeply and crosses his arms over his chest. His expression shifts from concern to confusion within seconds, probably imagining political problems or some nonsense related to titles and ranks.

“That’s right, Alpha Caldwell. I want to know everything about both your maternal and paternal families”

I pause briefly

“Did you bring the file I asked for?”

Christian nods and opens his jacket.

From inside, he pulls out a thick folder packed with documents, some newer and others yellowed with age.

He drops it onto the desk with a dull thud.

“Here it is.”

His fingers remain on the leather cover for a few seconds while he studies me closely.

“Now tell me, Your Highness. What exactly do you want to know?”

And the seriousness in his eyes makes it clear that, whatever it is, he is willing to answer.

Christian Caldwell is not an evil man.

Nor is he innocent.

He tried to help Celine, but not enough, and from what I’ve seen since meeting him, he seems aware of that himself.

It isn’t my place to judge what role he will have in my mate’s life. That decision belongs solely to her.

But one thing is clear to me. The concern in the eyes of the man sitting in front of me is genuine.

And that is far more than I can say about the rest of the Miller family.

An hour later, as I review the Miller family documents, I find nothing that resembles my mate. And I don’t mean her personality, because I came to the conclusion long ago that Celine is far too good to resemble them. I’m talking about her traits. I have records spanning seven generations in front of me, and nothing matches her.

All the Millers were born with dark, almost black hair and blue eyes, and every male, without exception, has been an Alpha, while the females have been Betas.

Like my Luna.

There isn’t a single significant variation in the records, and yet my mate has blonde hair, hazel eyes, and a wolf whose development has been anything but normal.

“Have you ever seen Darius’s or Cassius’s eyes turn blue?”

Christian, my mate’s uncle, looks surprised and puzzled by the question I have just asked him. For several seconds, he watches me as though he thinks I’m joking, but when he notices that my expression remains serious, he frowns deeply.

“Change? They have blue eyes. I don’t understand what you mean by ‘turn blue.”

“I’ve noticed that you and Celine share the same light hair and the same hazel eye color. Have your eyes ever changed to a strange shade of blue?”

“No. The Caldwells have hazel eyes, golden when our wolves manifest and red when we become enraged, like any other wolf. I’ve never seen blue eyes in my family.”
