Chapter 71
The rain pounds heavily against the office windows as I close the Miller documents once again That folder isn’t giving me any answers, and I’m beginning to hate it.
“Celine’s eyes have changed to blue. At first, they were only golden, then there was some kind of mixture between gold and blue, and last night… they changed completely. A blue I had never seen in my two hundred and sixteen years. Alpha Christian.
The confusion on the man’s face slowly turns into concern.
“And what’s wrong with that? Is there something you’re not telling me, Your Highness?”
I nod while closing the folder that, for the moment, is useless to me.
“When Celine arrived here, she felt ill the following day, and I took her to the hospital for a general checkup. During the blood tests, the doctors found an anomaly. Not only is her blood unknown, but it is also… unique.”
Christian goes still.
“Unique?”
“That’s what the doctors said. None of them had ever seen anything like it.”
Concern settles once again on the Alpha’s face, and I notice his shoulders tense.
“Is Celine sick?”
“I don’t know.” I answer honestly while interlacing my fingers on the desk and watching the rain continue to pound against the windows behind me. “And that is precisely the reason why I asked you to come. I need answers, Christian. Because if there is something hidden within my mate’s lineage, I intend to uncover it before it has the chance to harm her. Maybe I’m just being somewhat paranoid and nothing is happening to her, but I don’t want to believe that. Celine is more valuable to me than all the wealth in my kingdom.”
Christian lowers his gaze for a few seconds, and I can see a shadow of helplessness cross his eyes.
“My father… his name was Remus Caldwell. That’s all I know. Unfortunately, as you know, my mother’s cabin was burned down by my nephew, and I doubt anything survived. My mother used to keep things very carefully, things my sister and 1 weren’t allowed to touch.” His voice becomes slightly more thoughtful as his fingers drum against the armrest of the chair. I’ll send someone to look for whatever survived that fire.”
The Alpha’s concern and willingness to help with the investigation earn him another point in my favor. My mother’s family, just like me, can see the hearts of people, and Christian Caldwell is a good man.
Only, he’s also a damned coward.
If I had had a sister, I would never have allowed her to bond with trash like Darius Miller. I would have torn that bastard’s head off long before allowing him anywhere near my blood.
“Go to the hospital. My Beta is waiting for you downstairs. I need a sample of your blood so the kingdom’s geneticist can analyze it.
Christian raises an eyebrow and, for the first time since entering my office, something resembling amusement appears on his face. The tension eases slightly from his shoulders, and a faint smile appears on his lips.
“I assume that if I refuse, you’ll hang me upside down yourself and drain me to the last drop. Right?” His small smile widens just a little. “It’s fortunate that I want to help both you and my niece.”
The Second Chance Of The Rejected Moon
The corner of my lips lifts slightly.
“You’re not wrong, Alpha. I’ll do whatever it takes for my moon, and when I say whatever, that includes taking a blood sample from you by force… or all of it.”
Christian lets out a small snort of laughter and rises to his feet while adjusting his coat over his shoulders and calmly fastening the buttons.
That won’t be necessary, Bastian Thorn. I’ll go. I’ll undergo every test that is necessary, all in order to help you and my
niece.
I nod, and just as he is about to leave, I raise a hand, signaling for him to sit back down.
Christian stops beside the door and looks at me with some confusion before returning to the armchair.
“Do you need anything else?”
I don’t waste any time.
The next question leaves my lips accompanied by an irritation I don’t even try to hide.
“Why did you bring Tanner Blackwood with you?”
The slight calm that had begun to settle over the office disappears immediately.
And judging by the way Christian’s expression hardens and the small smile leaves his face, I have the unpleasant impression that I’m not going to like the answer.
