Chapter 98

Bastian lets out a sigh and tightens his embrace, resting his chin on top of my head. I know I may be overreacting, but I’ve spent my entire life being made to feel small by my family. And even though I love Bastian with every part of my soul. I’m not going to let anyone make me feel insignificant again.

Not even him.

“I’m sorry. I never meant to make you feel that way. I promise it won’t happen again. And about Nadia… she’s a good woman She’s fought beside me for nearly a century. You’ll like her.”

“I don’t like her.” I break free from his embrace and take a step back, lifting my eyes so my words sink into his head. “She likes you, and I think you’re blind if you can’t see it. Or maybe you do see it, and you’re just choosing to ignore it. I don’t want her in our castle or anywhere near me. You’ll be king of this kingdom very soon, and you don’t have to keep going out to fight anymore. I need you here with me.”

The look of surprise and disbelief on Bastian’s face shakes me a little, but after what feels like an eternity, he nods.

“It’s not the way you think. She’s my friend. She always has been, and I’ve never crossed a line beyond our friendship. I swear that on my mother’s memory, Celine. You never have to feel insecure with her around me. She’s my captain.”

I tilt my head slightly.

He really is blind.

I’ve already told you what I think of her, and I’m not going to repeat it. If you want everything between us to be okay, if you don’t want to see me angry because of her, keep her away from us.”

I walk past him, trying to leave the chamber, but he catches my arm, stopping me.

“Well… I don’t want you to stay upset with me.” He gently pulls me back into his arms, wrapping them around my waist and resting his forehead against mine. “So stop making that face, because there’s someone I’d like to introduce to you properly.”

I shove him with both hands and glare at him again.

Did he seriously not understand a single thing I just said?

I told you I don’t want her in this castle.”

“It’s not Nadia, my love.” A small smile curves across his lips. “My grandmother arrived this morning, and the castle is in complete chaos right now. The servants are running everywhere, my father is thrilled, my grandfather wants to go back to Greenland, and… my grandmother Sonia is eager to meet you.”

My anger softens a little.

Not much.

Just enough for a faint blush to spread across my cheeks.

I know it does because I can feel the warmth.

I’m embarrassed.

“Your grandmother?” I ask almost in a whisper. “You never told me you had a grandmother, Bastian.”

He lets out a quiet chuckle and shakes his head.

“It just never came up. Besides, she’d been away from the kingdom for a very long time. But now she’s here. She came to

attend my coronation… and our mating ceremony.”

i study him more carefully.

Today he isn’t wearing the training clothes he wears almost every day.

Instead, he has on perfectly tailored dark trousers, a black shirt, and a jacket that makes him look just as elegant as he does dangerous.

Then I glance down at myself.

Combat boots.

Training pants.

My hair still damp from the shower.

A small sigh escapes me.

“I need to change. You should’ve started by telling me about your grandmother instead of everything else.”

Bastian shakes his head, amused, and folds his arms across his chest.

“I had to tell you everything else because I don’t want you staying angry with me. Besides…” He grins. “I haven’t forgotten that you left me lying in bed completely alone and unfinished.”

A sly smile slips across my lips.

“Don’t make me decide you’re the one who deserves a worse punishment now, sweetheart. You kept me in that bed while you fucked me hard for hours. It’s hardly my fault you didn’t finish when you should have.”

He lets out a husky laugh and slowly shakes his head.

“You’re cruel, love. But I’ll collect that debt tonight.” He kisses my lips softly, lingering for only a few seconds before pulling away. “I’m not spending the whole day dealing with that kind of torture down there.”

I smile with every ounce of mischief I can muster.

“Only if you behave yourself. Now let me change into something more appropriate. How am I supposed to dress? She used to be a queen!”

My mate chuckles quietly, amused by my sudden attack of nerves, but lets me return to the dressing room. He follows me inside with the ease of someone who knows the room almost as well as I do.

“There’s no dress code for family, Celine. You don’t have to impress anyone.”

I shake my head as I slide one hanger after another aside, looking over dresses, trousers, jackets, and blouses without choosing any of them.

The more I look, the less certain I become.

“Where’s Aymara? I need her here.”

Bastian walks over without saying a word. He gently takes my hand away from the hangers and begins sorting through my clothes with complete ease. After a few seconds, he picks out a black skirt, a matching shirt, a pair of flats, and a jacket that goes perfectly with the outfit. Finally, he opens the small drawer where I keep my jewelry and chooses a delicate platinum chain with a small diamond pendant.

“You don’t need Aymara. You’re just panicking. Besides, she and Thomas are on three days’ leave because of their new mate
