A low sound escaped Lucy’s throat, which sounded like something between a sob and a groan as she sat up. She curled in on herself, hugging her knees as if trying to protect herself. Her eyelids fluttered, until finally her gaze focused and found me.

For a moment, she simply stared, as if she thought she was dreaming. Then recognition dawned and her eyes widened. “Bella,” she whispered hoarsely. “Is that you?” Her voice cracked, and tears welled up immediately. She pushed herself up on one hand clumsily, and reached out toward me with shaking fingers. “Bella, please,” she cried. “I don’t know who these people are. I don’t know why I’m here. You have to help me. They have abducted me and you have to inform the police!”

I didn’t move, my body going stiff. Scott’s arm tightened slightly around me, as if assuring me.

Lucy’s gaze flicked to him for a second and then back to me. She walked on her knees to me. “Bella, take me away from here. Jared must be waiting for me,” she continued desperately. “He doesn’t know where I am. He’ll be worried. Bella, please tell them to stop, and take me away.” She looked at others and then started crying loudly.

I listened to her icily, watching her cry, watching her struggle for breath, watching the way her eyes darted around the chamber, searching for escape. And she was in fear.

She wanted me to melt. Instead, there was nothing but coldness in my heart. “Why did you try to hex me?” I asked directly, trying to keep my voice steady despite the tension vibrating through me.

Lucy froze at my question. Her crying faltered, and confusion crossed her face. But She shook her head weakly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said. “Hex? be what that means.”

Before I could speak, Rowan exploded. “You liar,” she screamed, straining against her restraints. “You always knew exactly what you were doing.”

Lucy’s denial was such a lie that I wanted to slap her. I felt a wave of disgust rise inside me at how easily she slipped into the role of victim every time she wanted to manipulate me.

I turned my head slightly toward Nancy. “She is lying, Nancy…”

Nancy understood immediately as to what to do. She stepped closer to Lucy.

“What are you doing?” Lucy squealed, leaning away from her, her eyes filling with fear.

Nancy lifted her hand and murmured a spell under her breath, “Kvai sk’ga.” The moment the spell hit Lucy, goosebumps lined her skin. The magic settled over Lucy like an invisible net, and I saw her stiffen as if something inside her had shifted against her will.

“This will make lying impossible,” Nancy said. “She will still try, but the truth will come out.”

Lucy mocked, “I’m only speaking the truth!”

Nancy didn’t respond to her. Instead, she looked at me and said, “Now question her”

I looked back at Lancy. “How did you meet Rowan?” I asked. “And how did you ask her to hex me?”

Lucy opened her mouth immediately. “I didn’t-” she said quickly, but the words faltered halfway out. Her face twisted, and she slapped a hand over her mouth, eyes wide with shock.

Her hand trembled as she pulled it away. “1… I gave her money,” she said, her voice breaking. “I paid her to hex you.”

She stared at me in horror, then slapped her mouth again, shaking her head violently. “No. No, I didn’t mean to say that.”

I felt nothing resembling surprise. A part of me had already known.

Nancy watched her with calm interest. “The truth spell doesn’t allow manipulation,” she explained to her. “Your mind can no longer reshape reality to suit your needs.”

I asked the next question. “Were you involved in Millie’s death?”

Lucy’s breathing became frantic. She shook her head hard. “No. I would never-”

Her voice cut off again, her body jerking as if the words were being pulled out of her against her will.

“That day,” she said, her voice breathy now. “Rowan thought you came out of the car and she cast the spell. But she didn’t know it was Millie. I wish it was you!” Lucy gasped at her truth. “B–but it was Rowan who tried to kill you!”

The words landed like stones. I felt Scott’s arm tighten around me, his breath sharp Lycan growled, making everyone in the room go still.

“She came to me. She hired me to kill you! She was involved,” Rowan shouted, her voice raw with fury. “Again and again. Always crying. Always begging. Always offering money.” Rowan turned her head slightly in my direction, even though the blindfold covered her eyes. “She came to me long before you can imagine,” she spat. “Just like you, she also wanted Catherine dead.”

And at those words, the world seemed to tilt. I felt the color drain from my face, and my heart slammed hard against my ribs. I took a small step back. Scott was behind me.

I looked at Lucy, my voice barely above a whisper. “Is that true?”

“What?” Lucy shot back. “N–n–n–n–yes!”

The chamber felt suffocating.

Rowan continued, her voice bitter. “She took potions from me to control Jared. She wanted Catherine’s life. Her position. Her money. She was jealous of your mother!”

This time I couldn’t stop myself. I stepped forward and slapped hard across Lucy’s face. She shrieked and stumbled back. “Why did you do that?” I screamed on her face, my body shaking in fury. “Why, Lucy, why did you kill my mom?”

Lucy stared at me for a moment and then something inside her snapped. She snarled, “Yes. Yes. Yes, I killed her! I did it because I wanted everything she had,” she said. “I wanted to be rich. I wanted to replace her

I stood there, listening to her madness.

“I hated Catherine from my college days! Jared loved her and not me. He had eyes only for her. It was Catherine, Catherine and Catherine only for him. That bitch was always “miss goody two shoes. She didn’t finish her college degree and married him. And what about me? I was forced to marry a fucking bastard who divorced me, left me with no money. When I went to Jared for help, he simply shunned me. So I did what I had to do. I had to secure a place for me and Maya in this world. I used Rowan’s potions to control him!”

My hands clenched. I had come seeking answers. What I found was something far uglier than I had imagined. And I wasn’t sure how much more of it I could bear.

“So you decided to kill my mother? To destroy a loving family just because you wanted the money?”

“Yes!” she sneered. Then suddenly, a bitter laugh bubbled from her. “Guess what? Your mother was pregnant with a baby when she died.”

My stomach churned with a deep, sickening disgust. I couldn’t hold myself, and I launched myself at her, kicking and slapping her. She screamed and cried for help, but no one came forward to rescue her. After a while, Scott pulled me away, and hugged me tightly. It was then I began crying. “She ruined our family… She killed my mom… She poisoned my father…”
