Asking For Help
Jacqueline grimaced at the sight of the man entering the room. It was bad enough she was only wearing Bar’s shirt and wrapped in blankets while Bjorn was in the room but having her father in the room was uncomfortable to say the least.
“You’re here early,” she commented angrily at him. “I’m pretty sure I told you I needed space and time away from you.”
“I need your help. Jack and Aspen left last night to visit her
parents, and they stopped somewhere along the way to
celebrate their baby and I can’t reach him.”
“If you can’t reach him, maybe he doesn’t want to be
reached. I can feel him through the bond and he is fine.”
“Yes. I know he is fine. The issue isn’t with him. I would have
gone to him for help, but I couldn’t reach him. I’m coming to you.”
“Why? What is wrong now?”
“I was in the temple.” Jack ruffled his hair and for the first 1:39

time Jacqueline noticed how pale he looked. “I was praying,
trying to make sense of what has been happening over
the last little while. I didn’t go back to my rooms until this
morning. When I got there, I realized Winika was not there. I thought perhaps she went for a walk. I tried to reach her through our bond and she, like Jack, has me shut out. I thought she was angry with me for yelling at her yesterday
because we argued extensively before I went to the temple.”
Jacqueline edged closer to the side of the bed as she kept the blankets tight around her. “Where is she?”
“A housekeeper came to me. It’s common for kings and queens to have spies in other realms. Happens all the time. Turns out one of the housekeepers who was working for us in the royal chambers is one of their father’s spies,” he waved at Bar and Bjorn. “Another housekeeper overheard a conversation where Winika was told that King Oberon would help her get both of her daughters home and together if she cooperated with him.”
“You are kidding me.” Bar looked at Bjorn, “did you know he was going to use Winika?”
“No. I knew he was going to try to get Jacinta from the temple but not using Winika. He said nothing to me about Winika.” 2/11

“You knew Oberon was going for Jacinta?” Jack accused angrily. “You didn’t warn me?”
“Yes I knew, I arranged extra security around her, and I let Jack know. I expected Oberon would make a play. However, we weren’t expecting him to make a move yet because it should have taken him longer to get to where Jacinta was being held. If it weren’t for Winika giving him information then he would still be scrambling. If he convinced your wife to help him, I think the problem is in your house and not mine. The temple should have been able to protect her, but they would also know not to hurt Winika and to keep her safe. There were people in place to keep Jacinta safe, not Winika.”
“You truly arranged security for Jacinta? You hate her. Why would you do that?”
“I don’t like her,” Jacqueline agreed, “but I knew it would hurt you, Winika and my brother if she was hurt and frankly, having someone else try to use her to get to me kind of pissed me off. His plan was to get you to bring me to Oberon in exchange for Jacinta. Someone must have tipped him off that Jacinta’s bond family bond was cut, and he opted to grab Winika because let’s be honest, you would trade me for
her.”

Jack snapped, “I am not trading anyone for anyone! I came
to ask for help. Help me get my wife back. She is clearly not in her right frame of mind. She’s ill, Jacqueline and making foolish decisions. If she went with a damn bear shifter,” he
waved at Bar and Bjorn, “no offense, then she’s out of her
damn mind.”
“I would argue she knows what she is doing and is making
decisions she chooses to make.” Jacqueline retorted. “When are you going to see she doesn’t actually care for me and
despite the familial bond being broken, she still prefers Jacinta to me. She would trade me for Jacinta in a heartbeat.”
“She loves you, Jacqueline. She absolutely loves you. She is dealing with guilt and –”
“Stop!” she held up a hand. “I don’t need you here giving me
excuses for the shitty behavior of the women in your life, King Jack.” She looked at Rafferty, “Oberon is where right now?”
Rafferty closed his eyes and then opened them, “he is with
Winika and Jacinta in a garden but it’s hard for me to pin where the garden is. It’s not a frozen one.”
“Where are they going?” Wilder asked her.

“The spring.”
“The spring?” Jack frowned. “What is the spring?”
“The spring is the site of the future temple and home of the Queen of Kings and Queens.” Rafferty made a face and turned to Jacqueline, “why there?”
“He can smell Bar there,” Jacqueline said with a shake of her head as she sifted through Oberon’s thoughts. “He is following a scent of Bar because Bar spent time there last night and he’s thinking because it’s a special place for us, he will have the upper hand because we’ll be lost in the sentimentality of not letting our space be tainted. I don’t think he realizes the space is sacred. He’s in for a rude awakening.”
“You can read his thoughts?” Jack asked with a frown.
“I can read lots of thoughts. I have to keep it turned off or I’m hearing everyone’s thoughts. It’s getting stronger every day,
and I find it difficult to keep the noise out of my head unless I keep all of it out.”
“Can you hear your mother’s thoughts?”

“You mean Winika or the Queen Mother?”
“Winika.” Jack appeared frustrated with her. “You might have part of the spirit of the Queen Mother, but you are our daughter, and I refuse to concede that fact to anyone. She can call herself what she wants but we are your parents.” He stepped towards her with his arms over his chest. “Those eyes, that hair, the complexion,” he held her stare, “that proves you are of my blood, and I am not willing to let you go simply because of a shitty start to our relationship. You can be the Queen of Kings and Queens. You can be the direct descendant of the Queen Mother. You can be the mate to three princes. However, and I cannot emphasize this enough, you are my child. I love you. I want to fix our relationship. Search my brain for my thoughts if you want. You’ll know I’m not lying.”
She looked away, tucking her tongue between her teeth and cheek, “yet you hurt me on repeat, Jack.”
“I will fix it. It will take time. It will take dedication. I will prove
to you with my actions and my behavior.”
“In exchange for her help to get your wife back?” Bar said
with a snort. “You’re asking us to risk Jacqueline for Winika

and Jacinta.”
“No. I am asking you to help me formulate a plan which would allow me to get my wife back home and Jacinta back
to the temple where she belongs. My heart is settled on
Jacinta. Bond or no bond, the more I think of her actions, the
more I know I need distance between myself and her cruelty.
I will continue to go to the temple for guidance on how to deal with my own anger at both her and my mate. I do not
want to risk you, Jacqueline. I am not asking you to sacrifice yourself or your mates. I came to ask you to help me figure out where Oberon would take them. I will go myself to get
them back. I am sure I can take on a damn bear shifter.”
Jacqueline bit her bottom lip, “Winika is torn. She is with Jacinta and Oberon. Jacinta is pledging some kind of allegiance to Oberon. She is agreeing to work with Oberon. Winika is realizing now that she made a mistake, but she
feels pushed into continuing. Oberon wants to make me a slave to his power and Jacinta is buying it hook line and sinker. She is believing she is going to get her powers back.
She wants to hurt me. She thinks if Oberon has me in a cell
she will be able to torture and control me.” She looked at her
mates, “I’m really sick of this bitch.”
“We all are my love,” Wilder sighed. “We aren’t going to have 7/11

sex this morning are we?” he pouted.
“Nope.” Jacqueline sighed loudly. She waved at Jack, “you need to go stand in the hall. I need to get dressed. We’ll take you to the spring. We’ll wait for Oberon, Jacinta, and Winika and then we’ll put the king in his place. We’ll probably crown Bjorn if necessary and then we can all go live our own lives, happily ever after.”
Rafferty was looking at Bjorn curiously as if he could see something she couldn’t and she searched Bjorn’s thoughts and found nothing which would suggest he was going to help
his father instead of his brother.
“I’m going to go check on my mate,” Bjorn said quietly. “I want to see her one more time before I go with you to take on my father’s maniacal bullshit.” He slapped Bar’s chest, “I might not be able to fight him like you do but maybe I can rationalize with him. Hopefully, he’s not so far gone in his power–hungry madness he’s still got some of him in there.”
“Only time will tell,” Rafferty said his eyes not leaving Bjorn.
“Bjorn,” Bar said suddenly, his eyes narrowed on his brother,
“be careful. Please. I need you to be careful.”

“If you talk to your mate, tell her I’ll be around to talk to her later and give her my opinion.”
“Thank you,” he nodded and he pushed past Jack to leave the
room.
Jack looked around the room, “what was that?”
“Rafferty can see a bit into a person’s future. Bar can mimic powers, so he saw whatever it was Rafferty saw.”
“He’s going to get hurt. I can’t see it all.”
“The future is never static.” Jack said reassuringly. “It can change. If we’re ready and prepared, then we can keep him safe as well as Winika.”
“And Jacinta,” Jacqueline grumbled. “She needs to stay safe because I’m not done with her.”
“And Jacinta.” Jack agreed. “I have a few things I want to say to her too. I can’t believe she agreed with Oberon to try to lock you up to use you for your powers.”

“I can. Crazy bitch,” she muttered, “okay, go,” she waved him at the door. “We’ll be with you in a few minutes.”
“Jacqueline, for what it’s worth, believe me or not, I do love you and I will repair the fracture in our bond.”
“Call Jack again. If you can’t reach him, try Aspen. Push the boundary until they feel your stress. We need his help. Wilder, find River and your parents. It’s going to be all hands–on deck.”
Jack left the room and closed the door behind him.
“This is happening faster than we thought it would.”
“It is,” she answered Bar’s question. “Are you okay?”
“I see my father hurting my brother and,” he rubbed his chest, “I don’t want him hurt. He’s a giant asshole but the vision is of him in the snow bleeding out. It is not what I want.”
“We don’t know the depths of this vision, Bar. Trust in the Queen Mother she is doing what is necessary.”
“I trust her, I trust you, I trust my mates.”
