So It Begins
Bar sat on the stump of a toppled down tree and waited for his father to appear as they predicted he would. Wilder and Rafferty were pacing in front of him.
“We can keep her safe.”
“I’m not worried about keeping her safe. I’m fucking furious
and trying to control my rage because I want to rip his throat
out. He stood by when my brother murdered my first mate.
Instead of being thrilled that I was given a second chance, he’s willing to cause my new mate pain.”
“He can’t hurt her though.” Rafferty insisted.
“It’s not about whether or not he can hurt her,” Bar raised his arms up frustratedly, “it’s that he wants to. After all the hell I’ve been through, he saw her power and immediately thought, I want that. It doesn’t matter to him that it’s going to break me if I lose her. He simply wants power. Why the fuck
am I stuck with a family like this?”
“I do think Bjorn is redeemable,” Wilder shrugged as he kicked a small ball of snow. “I think he has lived with a lot of quilt and regret.”

“Guilt and regret? At least he got to live. She died.”
“Bar, you do know this is not healthy, right? Holding onto so much hate.” Rafferty knelt next to where the spring bubbled and ran his hand through it.
Bar nodded as he stared at the water. “I sat her last night and realized I have so much anger in me that it clouds my judgment. I was actually pissed off that the three of you
didn’t chase after me.”
“What? Are we in high school now?” Wilder frowned at him.
“You told us you wanted space. Jacqueline was hurting because of the shit you spouted. You wanted us to chase you after you all but made her cry and demanded to be left
alone?”
“I know what I asked and I know what I did,” Bar sighed, “but I think I was expecting her to read my mind.”
“She told us multiple times Bar she won’t. She is giving us respect by not delving into our thoughts.”
“I love her,” he said quietly as he adjusted on the stump. “I’m still worried about the fact she didn’t feel the bond, I’m not

fae and I’m not the only mate she has. I’m angry and sullen. and I was always a very serious individual. I’m not the party animals and good–time boys you two have always been.
My mother swore I came out of the womb with a scowl
and judging people for their bullshit. Being raised in the
household I was, I never got to be playful. I was studious and
intense. The rare bit of spare time I ever had, I would sit and
read in the library away from the noise. I’ve always been a
solitary individual. Now I’m in a poly relationship with the
Queen of Kings and Queens. When I tell you I’m torn from
being the proudest man on the planet and feeling like the biggest imposter, I’m not kidding.”
“You do realize we’re in the same boat as you,” Wilder folded
his arms over his chest with irritation. “She didn’t feel our
bond either and she was actually having conversations about rejecting us. She actually went to her mother’s realm and debated not returning, Bar.”
“I don’t know what I would have done,” Bar whispered and then sniffed the air. “He’s close. He is following my scent.”
“Do you know who I feel sorry for?”
“Jacqueline?”

“Jack, King Jack. His wife, his mate, just betrayed him in the worst possible way by plotting against him to make him save her. This guy just can’t catch a break. His daughter and his mate are both pieces of work.” Wilder grunted with irritation as he looked in the direction of the clearance Rafferty said his visions showed as the entrance of Oberon’s entourage.
“At least we know our mate will never betray us. She’ll just kill us off and move back to the realm with her mother if she gets sick of our shit,” Rafferty snorted and then ducked when Wilder smacked him in the head.
Bar rose from the stump as his father came into view. He cursed under his breath as he noted Winika was being carried by two of his father’s biggest soldiers. “What did you do the mate of the king of the Northern Realm, King Oberon,” he called out furiously.
“She was not being as agreeable as I needed.”
“And you hurt her? I imagine King of the Northern Realm will take this rather poorly.” Bar grimaced angrily.
“She tried to disappear on us and so we needed to keep her from leaving.” King Oberon stood on the other side of the clearance, “where is your mate? I sent King Jack a message 4/11

telling him I would give him back his mate for her. I know he will do anything to get her back.”
“Anything except offer up his daughter,” Bar shrugged and rolled his shoulders out. “I’m afraid none of us are going with you, Father. I need to ask, what you think you’re going to accomplish here today.” He gave a look to the young woman who was standing at his father’s elbow, “Jacinta, as
a warning, what I did to your head in the bookstore will look like child’s play.”
“I’m not afraid of you Bar.” Jacinta spoke up.
“You should be.” He looked back at his father, “well? What is
your end game?”
“Jacqueline will be the direct conduit to the Queen Mother, as she calls her, and will provide me insights on how to expand my empire and to live longer. She is immortal.”
“She is immortal,” Bar agreed. “How do you intend to take her?”
“Do you think I will reveal all my plans, Bar?”
“You don’t need to,” Rafferty interjected. “You are so full of

your own ego you’re not realizing she only showed you a small fraction of who she is. You think you know everything about her because she gave you a tiny glimpse.”
Bjorn’s voice rang out from the side of the forest as he approached, “Father this is not going to end well for you, and I am concerned that your actions are going to destroy our entire realm. I will not have a regency to inherit if you do not rethink what you’re up to.”
“Traitor,” Oberon snarled at him. He waved to a handful of his
soldiers behind him. “Seize him. He has committed treason
by betraying his king.”
“I will put our kingdom ahead of the king any day,” Bjorn stood boldly as if he dared the soldiers to attack him. “You are sick and greedy and your desire for more than what you are entitled to is putting our realm at risk.”
“You lack vision!”
“You lack devotion to the creator. Do you really believe she will reward you for causing her daughter harm?”
“She is female and will give me what I want to protect the child she sent to this place.”

“Oh, you foolish little man,” Jacqueline’s voice rang out as she popped into the space. “You don’t know the power you’re screwing with.”
King Jack and his son appeared immediately behind her.
“Before you decide to grab your mate and abscond with her, King Jack, please know that she is tied to my soldiers at various points. If you come for her, you’ll need to take on all five of them and they are all armed to the teeth. At least one of them will puncture her heart before you get away from her.
Jacinta,” King Jack ignored him, “why?”
“King Oberon promised to let me live in his palace as the princess I am meant to be. Who needs a mate when I’ll have men at my beck and call? I want that bitch to pay for what she stole from me.”
“Jacqueline took nothing from you. You reaped what you sowed, Jacinta. The Queen Mother herself set your punishments on you. All you lost is your own fault.” King Jack shook his head and then tapped his chest, “even if our bond were not severed, I would disown you, Jacinta. You are no

daughter of mine. I am ashamed to say my blood runs in
your veins.”
Jacinta paled at the call out. “You don’t mean that.”
“I do. You’re a disgrace to all fae. If you like him so much,
call him Daddy but it’s not anything you’ll ever be permitted
to address me with again. All you’ve done to hurt your sister and to cause us all pain, you would think you would have learned but now you’ve hurt your own mother. Pathetic.”
“She lied.” Jacinta spat angrily. “Do you know what she did? She told King Jack where I was. She wanted to see what I would do and whether I would agree with the plan. It was some kind of test to see if I was truly as evil as you say I am. Those are her words, by the way. King Oberon barely had the plan out of his mouth and I was all in. I hate her,” she shot a venomous glare at Jacqueline, “and I want her to suffer. Mother,” she shot a furious glare at the woman unconscious and tied with ropes to the bear shifters, “tried to fucking stab me. She actually pulled a knife from her skirt and tried to kill me to save Jacqueline. We forced her to bring us to this town
and then we knocked her out.”
“She tried to stab you?” Jack asked quietly, “our mother tried to stab you?”

“Through the heart if you can believe it. She said she was trying to right a wrong.” Jacinta scoffed. “As if. She couldn’t
hurt a fly. She faltered.”
“She is our mother!” Jack was in disbelief.
“She denounced me, much like Daddy did.” She shot King Jack a glare. “Who cares? Not me. I’m going to live the life I was meant to anyway.”
“No. You’re not.” Jacqueline said as she flicked her wrists and water from the spring started forming a trail directly towards Jacinta.
Jacinta laughed as the water approached her. “What are you going to do sister? Get my socks wet?”
“No.” Jacqueline shook her head sadly, “see, in the smallest droplet of water I can hear my mother, the Queen Mother and she has decided you no longer will be afforded the opportunity to try to repent. Your life ends here, today, in this moment.”
“As if.” Jacinta made a face as the water reached her feet, not going anywhere near any of the soldiers or King Oberon, but

then slowly creeping up her legs. Jacinta turned pale, “what is happening?”
“You are being taken home to meet your maker, Jacinta.”
The soldiers leaped backwards and King Oberon watched in awe as the water rose up in increments to cover Jacinta’s body, freezing as it rose up over her. Jacinta twisted and turned, screaming as her body became engulfed with the frigid water. When it reached her neck she looked at Jacqueline.
“Stop. Make it stop right now.”
“I’m afraid it is out of my hands.” Jacqueline watched grimly as the water rose over her neck, then her mouth and then her entire head was gone. The water froze and then shattered, splintering into the air leaving nothing in it’s wake. One minute Jacinta had been there and the next she was gone.
“Holy fuck,” Bjorn’s words startled the soldier who had approached him.
The soldier spun from the fright of the man standing directly behind him and using a dagger, stabbed Bjorn in the chest.
