Jacqueline felt Bar’s tension and she motioned at him, “go with Wilder. You can help.”

“I can’t leave you unattended,” he shook his head.

“Jack is here. Rafferty is here.” She looked over her shoulder

as four more people showed up, “Hugo and Fawn are here

with River and Wraith. The Queen Mother is all around. This

fool literally came for us on sacred ground, and we know how

this is going to go down Bar. We talked at length about the

visions you and Rafferty both had. We know exactly what we

need to do. Go tend to your brother as we planned.”

Bar raced to join Wilder at her command, and she smiled as

she realized despite how nervous he was, he was listening

to her. They’d discussed many different ways to make it so

that Bjorn wouldn’t get hurt but nothing they came up with were going to alter the outcome. They realized it needed to happen this way for Bjorn’s sake.

“Do you see what you’ve done?” Jacqueline asked as Oberon stared in horror at the blood spreading out under his eldest son’s pale figure.

Oberon’s eyes watched where Wilder and Bar were

frantically ripping clothes off his son’s torso, but he remained

silent.

“Where did she go?” King Jack asked as he stared at the spot Jacinta once stood trying not to look at the scene away from them involving Bjorn. They’d given him a head’s up that this would happen, and he needed to focus on the task of saving Winika.

“As I said, the Queen Mother intervened. Jacinta was beyond redemption.”

“Jack.”

“Winika,” he croaked out as his mate opened her eyes and turned her head a fraction in his direction as if sensing he was there. “I am coming for you.”

“Bjorn!” a woman’s voice punctured the air and the sight of Dana trudging through the snow in the clearing made the Jacqueline and her mates nod. This was why they needed the situation to move forward. “What happened?”

“Dana, you shouldn’t be here,” Bar grunted at her as if he didn’t know she would be. “How are you here?”

“I followed him. I saw him looking through the window of my house and I knew something was wrong and so I followed him, but he moved faster than me. I was tracking

his footsteps.” She dropped at Bjorn’s head tears streaming down her face, “what happened?”

“My father tried to arrest him for treason and the idiot there panicked and stabbed him.” Bar shot his father and his soldier a furious glare. “My father is trying to take my mate from me and Bar came to help me protect her.”

“He only just found me. He can’t die,” Dana whimpered as she cradled his head on her lap. “He told me you would talk to me about this weird bear mate bond thing but now he’s

dying.”

“Keep talking to him, Dana,” Wilder said as he waved his hands over Bar’s chest. “He hears you. He feels your presence. Your bond is what keeps him tethered to this plane.”

This was the reason they’d needed Bjorn to suffer. This was the pivotal point for Bjorn and Dana and despite Oberon they were going to be okay. Jacqueline knew it.

“What are you doing?” Dana asked as light bloomed from both Wilder and Bar’s palms.

“Healing him.”

At Dana’s obvious awe at the situation, Jacqueline turned her

attention back to Oberon, “pull your soldiers back and set my

mother down, King Oberon or the men who blindly follow the

directions of a mad king will learn what happens when I am pissed off.”

“What have you done?” he asked as his eyes moved to where Jacinta stood.

“Did you think I was simply an empty vessel, Oberon? The Queen Mother did not put me on this earth to be a victim.”

“You lived among humans for years. You had no power.

The Queen Mother works through you. She can grant

immortality.”

“You see only what you want to see, you old fool,” Fawn

called out. “Jacqueline showed you how she learned she was the daughter of the most powerful being and how she was cherished, and you thought nothing else but that it would give you power if you could control her.”

“If she works for me, then I will be all powerful,” Oberon

insisted. “King Jack, bring her to me and I will trade her for

your mate.”

“Don’t do it Jack,” Winika’s words were raspy and tight, “I

have failed as a mother and as a mate. I went with him to

try to make things right. I thought if I got rid of Jacinta his leverage would be gone. I didn’t realize he would get the jump on me. Do not trade our child to this bastard.”

“My love, you should have told me your plans.” Jack responded with a sigh.

“Everything happened so fast. He showed up in our

chambers. I made a split decision, doing what I thought you or Jack would do. I thought if I could make things right,” tears dripped from her cheek.

Jacqueline caught the tears from the distance, and she created a small bouquet of snow flowers and rested them on Winika’s chest. “Winika focus on the flowers. They will keep you safe,” she put her hand on King Jack’s forearm. “Do not intervene. I can do this. I will get her back to you. You are

too emotional and we know the outcome based only on our

actions.”

“We will make it happen.” Jacqueline promised.

“Men!” Oberon called loudly and a bunch of shifters stepped

out of the wooded area, “charge them.”

Jacqueline laughed as they all were immediately tethered to space. She then encased them all in blocks of ice the way she’d once done to Jacinta. “I can manipulate anything with water in it, Oberon. They are frozen where they stand. The only one who can move right now is you and those holding Winika and it’s only because I wish it to be so.”

“What is happening to your mother?” King Jack whispered to Jacqueline as he watched the snow flowers spreading over her body.

“I’m making a shield so that idiot can’t hurt her again,” she whispered back.

“That is incredibly cool.” Jack whispered on the other side of

her.

“Reassure her through the bond, Jack,” Jacqueline encouraged him. “I can feel her fear.”

“What are you doing?” Rafferty asked her as she started walking towards Oberon. “Get back here.”

“We all know who the more powerful creature in this space is. He can’t hurt me.” She looked at Rafferty, “use your gifts. You can see what is going to happen. Am I in danger? We’ve

been over this.”

“No but let us not risk it, Jacqueline,” Rafferty pleaded with her. “We all know things can shift.”

“They won’t,” she called back as she walked through the spring, the water almost lifting her to stand in front of Oberon. “Order your men to release their ties to Winika or they will die. Let us not end today with more bloodshed.”

Her words had Oberon’s gaze flicking to his sons.

“You feel remorse King Oberon. You thought doing this would give you power, make your sons respect you for your strength and your determination. All you’ve done is drive them further away. Pity for you that you didn’t. You destroyed your relationship with your youngest son when you demanded he 7/11

holding Winika captive all had knives meant for her. If

Jacqueline moved too soon all it would take was for one to

strike out of panic and Winika would be harmed. “I am here

Oberon, release her.”

Oberon reached out and grabbed her, putting his forearm. around her neck as he pressed his chest to her back. “You are mine now Queen of Kings and Queens. I think I will keep Winika to make you do as you’re told.”

“Who has who?” she questioned with a laugh. She looked downward as vines emerged from the snow–covered ground to wind up around his legs, spiraling upward gripping his

thick torso over his bulky arms and then around his neck

squeezing in a way she knew he wasn’t going to forget

anytime soon. “You brought bulk to fight a fae’s war, and not

only a fae but the Queen of Kings and Queens.” From the

corner of her eye she watched as the vines tugged his fingers and then pulled his arm away from her neck. She then flicked her fingers and hundreds of tiny shards of glass in the shape

of blades flew off Winika’s body towards the throats of the men holding her hostage. “Gentlemen, my vines are slicing through the binds which tie you to my mother. Brother,” she called out, “in a moment Winika’s binds will be broken and

she’ll need to be removed from these fools. There is an awful lot of sharp ice, dagger sharp, ready to penetrate jugulars. I would hate Winika to flail as she fell and accidentally severed the throat of one of these beasts. Can you come

move her, so she isn’t covered in blood spray?”

Jack popped up beside her, “that was a bit gross of a description. I approve.” He paused before grabbing his mother and punched the bear king in the face. “That’s for threatening to take my sister from me.”

She watched as Jack very carefully extracted his mother from 9/11

the grips of the men and then slid her away. He delivered her to his father and Jacqueline watched as Winika fell into his arms sobbing her apologies for trying to be braver than she

was.

“Bjorn,” Dana’s voice wailed. Everyone turned to look to

see the man starting to sit up. “Oh god you’re alive. You’re actually alive. You stupid beast, don’t you ever scare me like that again!”

Bjorn’s laugh as he coughed loudly, “did I miss the

excitement?”

“Nope. Are you ready to be coronated brother?” Bar asked

him as he and Wilder pulled him up to his feet. “We have a king to overthrow.”

“You cannot,” Oberon protested.

“He can,” Jacqueline smirked, “with the blessing of the Queen Mother herself.” Jaqueline waved her hand behind her to the spring and as it did the night she completed the claiming bond with her mate, it formed into a pool, deep with a large table in the middle. Then a throne emerged from the table rising upwards. All of the high priestesses of the temples appeared one by one to sit around the throne and Jacqueline 10/11

made her way to take her seat. “Silly Oberon. You have

violated the laws of beasts and fae to try to take more than

you are owed. You are hereby brought to face the judgment of the Queen Mother in front of her priestesses. Kneel,” she snapped her fingers and put the king on his knees and slid him forward until he was immediately in front of the pool of

water. “King Jack, you have one minute to deliver retribution

to this beast for taking your mate. Do your worst.” She gave a wicked grin, “and then this bastard who continues to constantly hurt my mate is going to feel the wrath of the Queen of Kings and Queens.”
