By the time the paperwork was signed off, the coach and the manager both protesting heavily but realizing that Wraith was serious when he said he’d look for other colleges if they didn’t get on board, it was done and her head was pounding.

The minute the last person left the room, she leaned back in the chair, closed her eyes, and tilted her head back nearly perpendicular to the ceiling.

She felt her interest raise, “paid vacation?”

“Yes. You’ll be paid your hourly rate of pay for the full day with no days off for the full period. Since you need to be on call to help me mitigate any issues which arise, you’ll be paid for every minute of every day. If we can clean this kid’s image up, there’s a bonus coming to you too. Help me keep this kid on track and we’re going to make bank off him.”

“How? If we clean him up, he’ll never have another PR issue again.”

“Sure, he will. Famous people always have shit happening to them. He’ll have women throwing themselves at him. There is quite possibly, based on how much sex he’s been having, at least one baby mama out there. We just got a client for life. He’s smart. He’s manageable. He’s also really talented in his craft. We will pocket less than ten grand by the time everything is paid out but it’s worth this. We’re gaining his trust. He’s going to refer his fuck–up frat brothers to us when they screw up over the years. He’s going to bring us business. Guys like him surround himself with trouble. I meant what I said, he’s an investment.”

I have aunts and uncles for whom I would fight to the death. This farce in here today was all about people who wanted to keep their moneymaker making them money. None of them cared for his wellbeing. It sat wrong with me.”

“His mother seemed to change towards the end.”

“Not soon enough. I think she was sitting there realizing that her husband’s alimony payments aren’t going to be enough to support her lifestyle, so she needs to ingratiate herself to her son. He’ll keep her afloat until she finds another rich husband.”

“Wilder, that’s cold.”

“I’ve been doing this for a long time, Jacqueline. I’ve seen things. She isn’t the first woman I’ve met who used her kid for her own

selfish gains.”

“I guess time will tell if she means it or she’s duplicitous.”

He leaned over her, surprising her by dropping a kiss to her nose, “and you’ll get to spend weeks with me at a ski resort. He won’t need us to be with him twenty–four seven. We’ll have loads of time to get to know one another.”

She frowned at him, “I knew you had ulterior motives.”

“He always spends the holidays like Nancy, somewhere warm, balmy, and beachy. He’s going to insist on tagging along with us, but it means instead of seducing you on sandy beaches and beautiful ocean sunsets, we’ll be snuggling by fires, engaging in snowy walks in the woods and being bundled up in hats and mitts. He’s definitely thinking of you in a bikini, not a snowsuit.”

She rolled her eyes, “for the record, I think I’d like the beach better too.”

“You say that, but I think, you haven’t been exposed to the winter the way your family blood demands. New York gets cold but this will be different. This will get into your skin, and you’ll feel a connection to your bloodline. I’m sure of it.”

“If you say so.”

“I say so. Now, I have a meeting with Percy and a philandering movie star. I’d invite you to that one, but something tells me dealing with cheating bastards won’t be your cup of tea. Head on back to your office or, if you want, take the rest of the day off. Go home and start going through your wardrobe to figure out what you’ll need to bring with you and what you’ll need to buy.” He opened his billfold and put a credit card in her hand, “whatever you need, get it.”

“I can’t spend your money, Wilder.”

“Incorrigible.” She muttered as she took the card and shoved it in her pocket. “My mates are nuts.”

She missed the wide smile on his face at her comment as she left

the conference room without looking back.
