Jacqueline was fuming. Wilder Vaughn had just offered for the two of them to babysit a grown ass man to make sure he didn’t fuck up his rise to his former glory for four full weeks in small town Colorado in the dead of winter.

“You’ll come with me? For real?” Wraith asked quietly as he looked around the room at his parents who both avoided his gaze and his coach and manager who both seemed to be stuck in stunned silence. “Why?”

“What do you mean?”

“What do you want? Do you want to ski competitively? Do you want the podium? Or is all of this something they all pushed you to and you really hate it?”

“I want to ski. Skiing is the only place I have control,” he whispered looking at the floor, his cheeks flushed. “Skiing is where I can let myself go, be free, forget that I’m a burden or a commodity. It’s only me and the snow and a hill.”

“Then ski. Focus on skiing. Stop this shit you’re doing to get attention because the attention you’re gathering is going to dash all the dreams you are building for yourself. You want to build a world that is yours and yours alone? Then fix your focus.”

“Now wait a minute,” the coach spoke seriously. “He has competitions for the college coming up in January.”

“Which he will make in January.”

“He needs to be training at an appropriate level. I need to be there. We had an entire setup ready for Gore Mountain and then to Switzerland.”

“If you are so concerned about his training then you come to Colorado.”

“What do you know about coaching ski?”

“Not a damn thing but Jacqueline comes from an extensive line of family who loves snow and winter sports. Her father has skied the best mountains in the world. For her, he’ll happily relocate to back her up for four weeks. Her entire family would move to Colorado to support her career. She wants Wraith to make her look good. “It’s an imposition,” Wraith said quietly. “Clearly Jacqueline isn’t on board.”

“I’m on board,” she immediately reacted to the comment. “I’m on board with coming with Wilder to Colorado and being the supervisors and temporary family for you while we fix your image. I simply don’t know if my father would be thrilled to ggup my parents and my siblings at the last minute. 09:19

“Then we’re all in.” she gave what she hoped was a positive smile to Wraith. “I think while you’re at this program though, you should take advantage of the counselling services and do some very serious thinking about whether the team you surround yourself with right now is the one which aligns with your needs. Do you want this one to continue or do you need to start looking at the choices which have brought you to where you are? We’ll fix your image for now. You need to decide how you’ll maintain that image when you’re done the program. If this,” she shot a scathing glare around the room, “is what you want for your future, you’ll need to find ways to make up for their shortcomings. If, however you want a full change, it might be time to start looking at other colleges who, once this scandal dies off, will offer you the same full rides but with more structure and responsibility. We have one week before we head to Colorado. I suggest you start making some substantial changes now with your current pattern of behavior.”

“Like what?”

“Move out of the frat house to start with.” At his horrified expression she leaned forward, “if you want your image fixed, get away from the parties, the girls, the booze. Wilder can arrange a temporary off–campus apartment. We’ll add it to your lab.”

Nancy cleared her throat, “I’ll pay for it. I’ll pay for it and I’ll be there. I’ve been too busy dealing with my own problems that I forgot about my son. I’m all in. I’ll pay for it. I’ll be there. I’ll help Jacqueline and Wilder reframe your image.”

Jacqueline witnessed the warm moment and had a fleeting thought about what it would be like to have a mother be kind to her and then shook it away. There was all kinds of time for such thoughts. Right now, there were contracts to sign.
