Leaving the chain on the lock, she slowly inched the door apart and peered through the crack and then let her eyes widen incredulously. He was bigger than Jack, the man who’d identified himself as her father. He must have been bent over to look back through the peephole because from where she stood, he would have been chest height to it.

“Holy fuck you’re huge.” She did not budge the door a

fraction.

“You are puny. Let me in.”

“I’d rather not. Do you have identification?”

He folded his arms over his chest and blew out a puff of air which turned the outside of her door white with ice crystals.

“That’s kind of cool. How do I know you’re who you say you are though? I mean, I was allegedly kidnapped by your kind. I am not so trusting to let you into my space.”

“I would not cause harm to my sister. Do not be foolish.”

“Dyde, I’m a New Yorker. I’m not trusting jack shit.”

“Jack Frost,” he commented with a glint in his eye, “not shit.

She felt her lips twitch at the comment. “How do I know you weren’t the one who got rid of me or were in on the plot to

get rid of me?”

“Because I have spent the last twenty–five years searching

high and low for you, Jacqueline. I have been all over the world, in search of my sister. You were loved before I even knew you were a sister. Please, let me in.”

“How did you know where I lived?”

“I broke into Vaughn’s offices and searched your file.”

“Funny, I expected Rafferty to do that.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to take me to dinner tonight, but I left the offices

before giving him my address and I know Wilder is going to

taunt him with it.”

“But why?”

“Didn’t Jack tell you? Your father?” At his confused expression she gave a snort, “seems like Daddy left out a pertinent detail. The reason Wilder Vaughn figured out who I was is because during a meeting in his boardroom, he shook my hand and apparently that caused something called a mate

bond to kick in.”

“Oh no. Not that fucker.”

Rafferty.”

“Let me in. I’ll teach you all the ways to get rid of the bonds.”

“I need the blessing of my king first and he didn’t give it.”

“We can kill the king and I can take over.”

His dry, sarcastic comment made her eyes flick to his in surprise and the twist of his lip was so eerily like the drawl she often shot at someone it was uncanny. She slid the chain

off the door and let it open.

“Come in but if you kill me, I’ll haunt your ass for all of

eternity.”

“Fair deal,” he stepped into her place and grimaced. “This is what you’ve been living in?”

“This is nice! It’s a New York studio apartment with only a handful of roaches and no rats and my neighbors upstairs and down are both really quiet. Below me is an old man and the guy above me is an EMT who works shiftwork and a ton of overtime. When he’s home, he’s sleeping and when he’s not sleeping he’s at work.”

“My shoe closet is bigger than this.”

“You have a shoe closet?”

She closed the door and leaned against it and stared at him before repeating her earlier observation, “You are really huge.”

“You are really tiny,” he retorted.

“It is for a Frost. Jacinta is six feet tall. You are definitely more like mom. We tease her because there is definitely a wood

He pointed to his head. “We’re all blonde.” When she opened her mouth to protest he shrugged, “also I can smell you.”

She rolled her eyes, “not this smell thing again. God, if I have to have another lesson in smelling I’m going to lose my mind.”

“Who gave you a lesson in scenting things?”

“Wilder and Rafferty.”

“Bastards!” he hissed.

His comment told her that he knew exactly what they were

doing and she raised eyebrows at him.

“You are my baby sister. How dare they?”

“Easy there, Jack.” She patted his chest and moved around him to flop down on the daybed, strangely comfortable with him in the room. “Let’s not start a war over little old me.”

“They lost you.”

“Yeah, I’m not buying that theory. There is no way they lost me and then were that excited to find me. The very first thing they did was send their sister to report to your father while they got me into an office to meet with him and explain to me that I was a fairy and the reason I turn blue isn’t because I’m sick and dying.”

“Of course you’re not sick,” his voice trailed off and he stared at her in horror. “You believed all this time you were ill?”

“Seriously, did your father tell you nothing?”

“No. He said the Vaughn family located you and I zipped the fuck out of there. I needed to see you myself.”

“Because you are my sister, my blood and my family.”

She was stunned when his giant frame pushed her little coffee table away and he knelt in front of her, taking her hands in his and staring into her eyes.

“I am a good big brother. I taught Jacinta everything

from how to skate to how to fight. I was robbed of that opportunity.” He was serious. “I am your big brother and your protector. Now that I found you, I will figure out what happened and I will personally punish whoever stole my sister from our family.”

She felt strangely emotional at the tender way this man was

declaring himself her protector.

“Will you let me be your big brother, Jacqueline?”

She nodded, “yes. I will.”
