Home Part I
Jacqueline landed back in her apartment with her chest heaving with rage. She looked at her hands, and they were a bright blue. Not even the mild blue she normally saw but getting more and more vibrant by the minute.
“That fucking bitch!” she inhaled a shaky breath. “She had to have done it. She had to have been the one to dump me. It’s the only thing which makes sense. If it was only her and the nurse, then she popped in and out and got rid of me.”
She paced with her thumbnail between her teeth, gnawing at the rage spiraling from her chest into her teeth.
“You have to prove it. They love her. She’s some pampered, spoiled princess who has been with them for years before you came along, Jacqueline. She’s got them all wrapped around her pinky.”
She felt a pang in her chest at the notion that Jacinta was going to play the pampered princess, spoiled socialite card far better than she ever could. She’d found and lost her family all in one day. A painful sob ripped from her lungs as she cursed herself for daring to dream.

“Will you let me be your big brother?”
The question was a mockery, and she inhaled sharply as she considered she’d let him into her home. She grabbed her
phone and sent a text to Wilder.
J: How do you make it so a fae you invited into your home
can’t simply pop back into it?
Her phone rang instantly and she answered it.
“Why are you asking?”
“Jack Frost, the prince, not the king, was here earlier. He came in. I don’t ever want anyone in my home without my express permission. Did I fuck up letting him in once?”
“No. You didn’t fuck up. If you are upset I want you to repeat
after me.”
“Okay.”
He spoke very slowly, clearly in a language she didn’t understand but she repeated it easily after him and then felt a strange calm settle over her.

“What did I just say?”
“A very quick protection spell which bars any uninvited being into your space and rescinds previous offers. Even if you bring him back in, he can only enter your space if you specifically permit it each and every time until such time you rescind that spell.”
“Like magic?”
“Exactly.”
“And it can’t be undone by someone else?”
“No. Nobody can enter your home without your permission,
ever.”
“Thank you, Wilder.”
“Now do you want to tell me what happened?”
“He was here. He made me feel like I was safe with him.”
She felt her nose stinging as unshed tears collected. “He
convinced me to go to the palace where they live.”
“You went?”

“I did. He brought me to my parents. I met them. Jack, my father, was glad to see me but Winika, my mother,” the word seemed foreign in her throat, “is batshit crazy. She jumped me, pinned me to the floor, and was rubbing herself on me. She said she was making sure she could always find me.”
“Most fae mothers when they first have babies hold them skin to skin so that they can always identify one another even in a crowded space. It’s a bonding ritual.”
“She is bigger than me and stronger than me and pinned me unwillingly to the floor.”
“It’s understandable,” Wilder protested.
“You’re defending her actions? It was insane.”
“It’s a cultural and instinctual thing for mothers. She never got to do it with you following your birth since you were
taken.”
“By my sister.” She muttered.
“What?”

“I’m convinced Jacinta is the one who got rid of me.”
He laughed then, “absolutely not. She doesn’t have a malevolent bone in her body. She’s sweet and kind. She was injured when you were taken. She was shoved from behind and her head struck a table in the room and she suffered
a laceration. She was bleeding and everything. She has a
scar on her forehead from where she was struck. She was hysterical and has been distraught for years over your absence. It is not possible.”
“She hurt me today.”
“How?”
“She dug her nails in my back.”
“How?”
“When she was hugging me against my will.”
“I think there is a misunderstanding, but I promise you, Jacinta Frost is someone I have known my entire life. She is
only a handful of years younger than me. Whatever you feel you saw in her, couldn’t be further from the truth.”

“I’m hanging up now.”
“What? Why?”
“Because Wilder I’m realizing there is a pattern in the fae world that I’m not part of.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Gaslighting. See I’m a straight shooter. If it’s in my head and it needs to be said, I say it. I sure as fuck though, don’t try to convince other people that my truth needs to be theirs. If you don’t believe that bitch came at me, with her claws literally out to stab me in the back, then it is not up to me to convince you otherwise. What I will tell you is that I like my life, Wilder. I like my life with just me in it. I like making money. I like my little home. I like my solitude. Unlike my so–called family and species, I don’t need some kind of communal lifestyle. I think, the best thing we can do, is to go back to things the way they were before this morning ever happened.”
“Now hold on.”
“I don’t owe anyone anything. I’m not the one who removed me from my family. I’m not the one who did anything wrong. Yet, I saw the look in her crazy eyes and if you all think she’s 6/7

some kind of saint, then you can spend time with her and leave me alone, Better yet, since you can appeal to your queen, why don’t you talk to her about the rejection thing.”
“Absolutely not,” he growled. “Now I don’t quite understand why you are so angry but –”
She didn’t wait to hear what else he had to say and hung up.
