Home Part II
Jacqueline wasn’t sure why it felt like such a betrayal and yet it did. The fact Wilder immediately jumped to defend Jacinta
and refused to consider she’d felt threatened and was harmed by the woman who would be her sister, hurt. It stung deep in her chest.
The pounding of fists on her door made her stomp to the door to look through the peephole. Standing there were Jack and Jack. Once again the younger version was leaned forward his one eye in the peephole.
“Go away.”
“Let us in.”
“No.”
“We need to talk.”
“Nope. I’m going to figure out a way to tend to the wounds. on my back and then I’m going to bed to forget this shitshow of a day ever happened. Tomorrow I’m going to go back to being Jacqueline Frost, account manager and human being.”

“Your mother is hurting that you left so soon. Jacinta is consoling her. Let’s go back.”
“You have one sister. You don’t need another. I’m done. Go
away.”
“I have two sisters.”
“Jacqueline, please, open the door for your Papa.”
She scoffed at the name he gave himself. “You are not my
Papa.” The silence on the other side of the door made her
question whether or not the men had left. She shrugged
and started walking in the direction of her bathroom when
another knock pounded on the door.
“For crying out loud, go away! I don’t want to see you.”
“You are being unnecessarily cruel.”
“I am protecting my heart from people who do not have my best interests in theirs. You have one daughter, one sister already. You do not need another. Do me a favor and forget
you ever discovered me. I was fine yesterday without you. I will be fine tomorrow without you.”

“Jacqueline, no.” her father’s voice was hoarse as he slapped the door. “Did you put a spell on your home?”
“Yes. I asked Wilder how to keep my safety from unwanted guests. He taught me. You are not welcome. Now go away.”
“There has been a misunderstanding.”
“You mean the way the crazy lady pretended she was hugging me so she could dig her nails into my back and stab
me with her talons? Yeah, I misunderstood that.”
“You slapped her.”
“She put holes in my back first.”
“She was excited and over enthusiastic in her embrace, but you smacked at her in anger.” The younger man hissed furiously.
“You know what? I’m going to say this for the last time, but you need to go away, both of you. I don’t need to be part of a family where I’m an outsider again in my life. I’ve been there and done that and the T–shirt wasn’t even worth buying. I’m out.”

“Jacqueline, I cannot leave until we talk this out.”
“See, I don’t trust you. You can build some kind of icy block of walls that I can’t get out of and then suddenly I’m captured like a prisoner, held in a family I don’t want and who doesn’t really want me.”
She ignored the howls of frustration from the other side of
the door and watched incredulously as the door vibrated from the weight of the punch to it. She shook her head,
grateful that her building insisted on steel doors for all the
units. She walked to her bathroom and closed herself into
the room and turned the shower on. She then turned on the
shower speaker she had in there and paired her music to it and played it loudly.
Was it emotionally mature to blast music while taking a
shower to avoid having a conversation with family? Probably
not. Did she give two fucks? Definitely not.
By the time she got out of the shower, she was scrubbed raw.
Her throat was hoarse from singing loudly to two–thousands‘
pop songs. Concerned the fairies new to her life might
continue to annoy her for the rest of the evening, she put on
some noise–claiming headphones, powered off her phone,
crawled onto the daybed, and pulled her blankets up to her 4/6

She was aware it was barely six in the evening and yet she felt exhausted, overwhelmed and done with the day. Pulling
the pillow over her head for good measure she found herself
wishing she had not gone to work at all. The thought she may
need to look for another job flicked into her brain and she gave an impatient scream into her pillow before ripping it off her face and staring frustratedly at the ceiling.
Thinking of work made her think of Wilder Fairchild. The man was a walking wreck. His family was dysfunctional as fuck. He had people who clearly used him for monetary gain instead of a symbiotic relationship which benefited both parties. Were all biological families as messed as this? She expected it from the families she’d been part of growing up. People who didn’t share any kind of blood relationship were bound to not gel or actually care about one another.
This though, this exposure into family dynamics today was making her think that all the things she’d wished for as a
small child were foolhardy. It felt very much like a case of
being careful what you wished for.
As she lay there with white noise buzzing in her ears through her headphones, eyeballing the weird water spot on her 5/6

ceiling, she snuggled deeper into her bed and considered she was safe and sound where she was, despite how much
Jack had mocked her home. She didn’t need to leave her
space. It was far better than an icy palace where the people
were even colder.
All she knew was as of right now, she didn’t want anything
to with her biological family, her mates, or the entire fairy
community. Tomorrow would be a new day but for tonight, she was going to stay alone and in her home. Who needed family when she had everything she needed right here
