belly watching the twins grow increasingly frustrated with her lack of cooperation.

“We are not cancelling our bond.”

“I found out why you aren’t feeling it the same way we are.

We want to talk about it, Jacqueline.” Rafferty said seriously. “Being away from your kind, from your kin, fae,” he spoke seriously, “has corrupted your fae spirit. You need to be surrounded by your kind in order to bring your fae spirit

forth. The more you’re around your kind, the more you will come into your fae powers and abilities.”

“And if I don’t?”

The question seemed to stun them both.

“What do you mean?” Wilder asked with a nervous quality to

his tone.

“I mean, if I opt not to surround myself with fake–fae–folk,

then what happens?”

“You’re not hearing us,” Rafferty tried to explain again, “sweetheart, what I’m saying is, the more time you spend around your mates, your family, our family and other fae who are part of your true lineage and species, you will find yourself more.”

“Oh!” She shook her head, “I understand exactly what you’re saying.” She lifted her hand to her chin and began to blow little ice crystals to form a ball. “You’re telling me that if I spend time around Jacinta and her followers I’ll eventually become brainless, mindless, twats who see nothing wrong with a grown ass woman putting on an act that a five–year–old can see through. Tell me, are all fae women so conniving or just her?”

“She said you would say that” Rafferty sighed loudly. “She

commented to us that New Yorkers tend to be the some of

the toughest, untrusting people in the human world and that it would take a lot of our love and patience to help you.”

Without any warning she took the ball of ice she’d been piling

into her hand and squeezed it into a ball and threw it into Rafferty’s face.

“What the fuck?” Rafferty brushed it off his face in disbelief.

“You hit me with a snowball?”

“I’m hoping the bit of cold air clears the fog going on in your brain,” she snorted at him. “I want you to listen to me and listen to me well. She is right. I am a New Yorker. I can see bullshit a million miles away. I can smell a scam before it even hits my doorstep. I know how to avoid trouble and mind my own fucking business because I don’t want trouble. Do you know what I’ve figured out in twenty–four hours of being around you and your kin,” she mocked the word. “You’re all trouble. because someone threw me away. It is for my mental health and my own well–being; I am going to do what is right for me

and stay away from all those people who will brainwash me into a cultlike mess to believe that someone I know deep my gut doesn’t like me.”

“You judged her on two seconds. Come. Let’s go to my office.”

“Is she up there?”

“Your whole family is up there. My entire family is up there,” Wilder continued. “We need to fix this.”

“I quit.” She removed her lanyard from around her neck. “I’m sure you can get the money back by returning all the clothing I ordered.” She put the credit card with her work identification on the desk. She shook her head.

“You can’t quit over this.”

“If I can’t come to work and be treated with respect and my personal life get left at the door, then I don’t want to work here. I did not come to work to be accosted by people I don’t consider family or by men who are not my boyfriends or

husbands. I don’t know any of you. I don’t want to.”

“Okay, wait,” Wilder reached out and put his hands on her

shoulders and stared down at her. “Don’t quit. Please. Wraith

Fairchild messaged and said he trusts us to help him get

through this and if you bail on him and this plan, he might not

play along. We’ll back off. I don’t want you to quit.”

“I am not coming to work to get sidelined by this personal dramatic shit anymore.”

“Understood. We will let you work in peace,” he shot his

brother a sideways warning glance when Rafferty started to

protest.

“I don’t believe you.”

“Please. I am begging you, do not leave,” Wilder swallowed audibly. “We will respect your wishes to come to work to work. I need you on the account. I need you to come with me to Colorado to watch this kid to make sure his own mother doesn’t sabotage her. She’s a snake in disguise. I am sure of it. Wraith is going to make the podium when he goes to the winter Olympics. I know you feel bad for him. Don’t let him down.”

“Fine. I won’t quit but no more of this!” she hated how fast she was giving in.

“I agree.”

“I want to at least take you to dinner.” Rafferty argued. “Please. I am not willing to lose my mate or my bond.”

“I also want to spend time with you.”

“You can both take me to dinner tonight, but I swear if any of the Frost family shows up I’m going home. Is that understood?”
