He wasn’t wrong. Every single penny she saved was one cent further to making her goal of a million dollars in her bank account someday and so she nodded.
“I’ll take your bet but I’m not putting my hard–earned money on the table.”
“A kiss.”
“What?”
“I’ll put the cash up. You owe us each a kiss if you get hit on before you even make it back to the table.”
“Kisses?”
“On the mouth, minimum ten seconds. None of those little
pecks you give your grandmother.”
“I don’t have a grandmother.”
“You know what I mean,” Wilder folded his arms over his chest. “Real kisses.”

“Fine. That c–note is mine anyway.” She wriggled down off the stool and made a show of completely removing the jacket she’d only unzipped to this point and hanging it over the back of the chair. She looked around the room and noted the four men at the nearby table and sent them a smile and made her way to the bathroom.
After waiting what she thought was the appropriate amount of time, washing her hands, drying them, she pulled the door open to head back to the table. The door opposite the women’s room was clearly the men’s room as a man stepped into the small corridor with a smile on his face.
“Hey, hi.”
“Hi.” She froze as the guy looked her over.
“I like your hair.”
“What?” her fingers reached up and touched the piece which was hanging next to her cheek.
“The blue. It’s very pretty. I like it.”
“Oh. Thank you.”

“Are you in town long?”
She looked to the open area of the pub, a few feet from the hallway where they were standing. “Are you hitting on me?”
He blinked in surprise at how blunt she was being. “Um. Well, yeah. I saw you across the room and followed you to the bathroom. It’s creepy right? I’m sorry. It is creepy. Saying it out loud is creepy.” The guy started to hold his hands up apologetically.
“How’d you like to make fifty bucks?”
“What?”
She dug into her pocket and pulled fifty dollars out. “The guys I’m here with are trying to prove something and they said one of you at your table was going to hit on me before I came back from the bathroom and bet a hundred dollars on it. I’ll split it with you if you pretend this never happened.”
“If I can get your number, you can keep the hundred and it’ll be our little secret.”
“I’m not comfortable giving a stranger my number.”

“Are you staying at the lodge?” When she looked nervous at answering he shrugged, “not going to show up at your room or anything. If I see you up there, perhaps we can get a drink together at the bar.”
“Never mind,” she groaned impatiently and tried to step around him to get back to the table. “I can’t agree to a drink because I am in a relationship and we’re here on a family vacation.”
O
“I’ll take the cash.” The guy said with a shrug. “Anything to help out a girl but if your relationship doesn’t work out
or your family gets to be too much, my room number is forty–four. Call me anytime.”
She passed him the fifty dollars and then he walked out ahead of her and headed to his table. She counted to sixty and then made her way to the table, pausing to look at a sign on the wall as if giving time for someone to approach her and then she casually walked back to the table.
Taking back the seat she’d earlier vacated, she grinned at them. “Well,” she grabbed the bill off the table and poked through her bag which was sitting on the spare seat at the table and found a book and tucked it inside. “This will make a
good bookmark. Every time I look at it, it will remind me that I 4/7

Both men watched her actions wordlessly and grimaced.
Rafferty finally spoke, “you were in the bathroom a long time. Funny, the guy from the table who went to the bathroom ten seconds after you did, took a lot longer in the toilet than most men. He came out right ahead of you.”
“You want me to talk about the bathroom activities of a
stranger?”
“You ran into him in the hall.”
“And you are coming up with this story based on what?” she
met their eyes while taking a long drink of her beer. “This is good,” she held it up to them.
“You cheated.”
“On you? I would never.” She smirked as she set her beer down. “I’m getting hungry. I hope the servings are big.” She swung her legs under the stool happily. She’d made fifty bucks and she didn’t care that it was done duplicitously.
“I think you cheated,” Rafferty continued his accusation. “I 5/7

think,” he leaned over the table and stared into her eyes, “you ran into him in the hall and convinced him to pretend he didn’t hit on you.”
“You’re crazy.”
“Uh uh. You’re gorgeous. You’re wearing a pair of jeans that hug your ass like a second skin and let me tell you, when you got off your stool and walked away, the entire room turned
to look. Your ass makes me want to sink my teeth into it more
than I want anything this guy has on his menu.”
“Rafferty!” she frowned at his words.
“You cannot tell me he didn’t hit on you. He watched your
backside all the way to the bathroom before he nearly ran
after you. I’d bet my Ferrari that he stood on the other side of
the men’s room door waiting for you to come out so he could
casually run into you.”
“Maybe he was shy and chickened out.”
“Or maybe you cheated.” Rafferty wasn’t letting it go.
She rolled her eyes, “way to doubt your mate.”
