A Story Part I
“You’re going to kidnap me? Make me some kind of mate–sex–slave to your sons?”
Rafferty gave a snort, “sweetheart it could be you making us your sex slave. I wouldn’t mind at all. I have waited a long time for you.”
“This isn’t happening.”
She tilted her head at Wilder and frowned. He seemed really upset that his brother was playing the same game, using the same schtick as he did.
“Did you both do some kind of joint magic trick as kids?” When they both looked to her in confusion she waved at her hand which, if she was honest, still felt tingly.
“No. It is magic, but it is ancient fae magic. There was a time when all the fae were ruled by one queen instead of the current divide.” The woman answered before the men could.
“A fairy queen?” Jacqueline almost kicked herself for asking.
“Yes. A fairy queen. She was the first of our kind. She created us out of blossoms and blooms. Some in the summer and some in the winter. It is impossible to tell which came first, but eventually the fae divided based on when they were created,

rather than how. Like any great creator, our queen liked the idea of diversity and like Charles Darwin, hybridization. For example, she would take a fae born of a rose and pair it with snowdrops. To do that of course she needed to have them mate, and she couldn’t exactly grab two fae and tell them that in the name of curiosity they should have sex and procreate so she created mate bonds.”
“You’re telling me you think I’m mated to your sons because of some ancient need for diversity?”
“No!”
Fawn giggled, the sound reminding Jacqueline of a babbling brook in a quiet forest somewhere. Jacqueline grimaced at the thought considering she’d never been in the forest a day in her life. She was a city girl, through and through.
“No. The mate bond started for a practical reason but then eventually, our queen, our creator, realized sex without emotion was creating a bunch of horny little fae. We were too simplistic, more animal than anything. We were born of a bloom, ate, slept, procreated, and then died however, despite the bond to procreate, the creatures lived lonely existences, content to remain in their own homes until a need struck. She decided we needed more, to be more, to give more, to act more.”
“I see.”

“So, then she put more thought into what she wanted for us, her children. She made it so we wanted to be around others, to build families and friendships and soon, fae were collecting in groups, creating communities. However, we then started having some issues with not wanting to go outside our communities.”
“Fae tend to be social creatures only within their own world.” The man at the door spoke. “We love to be with our family and our friends but outsiders, well, for many fae even to this day, it is difficult. With the expansion of humans into every sector of the world, we’ve been forced to adapt, to thrive in a noisy world but for many, we prefer to be home with our kind at peace.”
“What my husband Hugh is saying Jacqueline,” Fawn shot him a tender smile, “is he’s very much a homebody and dislikes intensely having to be dragged out to mingle with the population. I would very much love to believe I am his blessing but sometimes I feel bad for him because he is cursed with a mate who is required to be surrounded by people all the time. It is exhausting for him.”
Jacqueline shrugged, “I get it. By the time I’m done with a day of work, being around people and dealing with stupidity, I just want to go home, be alone.
read or watch television.”
“You read?” Hugh asked excitedly. “What are you reading right now? What book is on your nightstand?” He looked to his sons, “you can learn very much about a person by what they are geagling.”

soon everyone was related.”
“Ew.”
“Indeed,” Rafferty scoffed. “Can you imagine procreating with a cousin or a sibling?”
“The fairy queen called a meeting of all her creatures to her. She insisted that twice a year a ball would be held. One in the spring. One in the fall. Then she did something extraordinary.”
Jacqueline wondered if the woman thought she was good at story telling because so far, she was not exactly spellbound. She looked longingly to the door and contemplated whether she could get hired somewhere else despite never having a large account of her own to manage.
“She adjusted the mate bond to pair beings, not specific breeds, or blooms as we like to call it, but t souls. She made the bond pull people together who would complement, uplift, and accept without reservation. Having the galas allowed the fae to find their soul mates. Over millennia we have evolved and expanded and soon our ancient queen grew tired and wanted to rest. She realized that there were fae who preferred to live in the cold and so she gave them the northern realm. Those which preferred. the warmth went to the southern region. She made a queen in the south and a king in the north. The bloodline for the south, always has a queen. Each queen mother has a daughter. My daughter River is my eldest child and someday will be me 11:47
