A Story Part II
Jacqueline tried to keep her lips straight as she tried not to laugh in the woman’s face. This whole family was fucking bananas. Then the woman double–downed on her weirdness and Jacqueline wondered if the room wasn’t being pumped with crazy spray through the air conditioning.
“The Northern king is Jack Frost.”
Closing her eyes, Jacqueline wondered how she was going to get out of this room where everybody was staring at her as if desperate for a reaction.
“If this is where you tell me I’m really a male fairy and soon to be king, you’re really barking up the wrong tree. Can I go now?”
“No, I am not going to tell you that you are a future king,” Fawn gave a laugh and patted Jacqueline’s hand gently. “Like my bloodline, the current king’s line goes all the way back to the beginning and only his male heirs become the new Jack Frost.”
“Whew.”
“We have another story to tell you now that you know the ancestry of our people.” Wilder said as he moved to sit on the arm of the sofa next to her. “Please, again, hear us out because this is really important.”

“If I listen to this, can I go back to my desk and work on the pitch for the Fairchild account? You’re not going to take the account away from me because I don’t believe in your mumbo jumbo are you?”
“The account is yours. You earned it fair and square with your brilliant plotting. That’s the fae in you by the way. Fae by nature are mischievous and curious, always looking at new ways to solve the problems. I should have known you were fae by the way Percy sings your praises. He doesn’t talk about anyone else in the office as much as he does you and your ideas.”
She felt a flush of pride at his comment. “Thank you. Go ahead then.”
“Approximately twenty–five years ago, as the queen, it was my turn to host the springtime gala. The fall/winter gala is held north. The summer/spring one is held south.”
“Where south exactly?”
“In a hidden realm in the forests of South America. It is warm, pristine, luscious with greenery and fertility.”
“Hidden realm?”
“As our lands were taken over by humans and their need to expand their industry, it became imperative we find a way to hide from them.”

“Okay.” She made a face, go on, you hosted the spring gala.”
“It is the king of the North’s duty to attend the gala with his people. His wife was heavily pregnant at the time, but she insisted she come along. We are of course in the south, healers and she knew if anything happened she was in the best place possible for her delivery. It was a win–win situation in her mind because her pregnancy had been unexpected. She was past the age when she thought she would ever be pregnant again. Her two older children were both adults. Yet she was overjoyed with the idea of having a new baby and so was the king. We made sure we had our best healers on hand for her at all times because of the potential risk of labor.”
“Sure. If the south are healers, what are the northerners?”
“Fighters.” Hugh said from the door where he still guarded it. “They are fighters. They are the defense against any enemies and any dangers. They were created to be cool and collected in the face of adversity and trouble. They are the strongest of the strong and they work on keeping this title.”
“Interesting.” She didn’t know what else to call it and wanted to kick herself for encouraging the narrative.
“They came to the gala and during the gala, the northern queen consort went into labor. With her husband at her side, they delivered a beautiful little girl. However, the most terrible thing

happened.” Fawn’s eyes watered as she stared at Jacqueline, “in the midst of cleaning up the queen consort, her name is Winika, the infant disappeared.”
“Say what now?” a sudden clarity of the conversation and the way everyone was looking at her made her realize where they were going with their story.
“The infant who had been taken to be weighed, washed up and ready to present to her mother was taken from the palace. The only people in the room were the nurse, who was one of my personal healers, and Jacinta, the princess of the North, who would be the daughter of the king and queen. She suffered quite the head injury. She said someone pushed her from behind and she fell onto a table in the corner of the room. My healer was also struck hard on the head, but she was convinced and maintains to this day, it was only the two of them in the room. Her only explanation was that the child was born with a gift of being able to transport, which usually comes much later in life to avoid situations like this. We don’t want our children popping in and out when there is danger about. With both women in the room harmed, the baby gone, the king of the north felt strongly we,” she waved to the people in the room, “and my daughter River did something to the child. We were able to eventually convince him this was not the case. We have cooperated but for twenty–five years the relationship has been strained. Winika has never recovered from the loss of her daughter and has become reclusive. She does not attend any galas, and they have become mostly perfunctory at this point. Find your mate and ve is the

general feelings because of the tension between the two realms. Most of my subjects are terrified Jack Frost will simply wipe us out in retaliation for the loss of his daughter.”
“You think I am his daughter. Why?” she cut to the chase.
Fawn nodded, “Wilder noticed something about you which only happens to the royal bloodline.”
“What?”
“Let’s just say,” Wilder cleared his throat, “that every diplomatic meeting with the Northern King since the loss of his daughter has him a particular shade which lets everyone in the realm know he’s pissed off. It is the royal sign of the north that when the royals are a certain color to be on guard.”
Before he even said it she knew.
“He turns blue.”
