Wilder looked at Rafferty and then his watch. “She’s late. She’s not coming.”

“She will come.” Rafferty sighed. “Perhaps she chose to take a shower or something. She left the lodge almost immediately after we got here. She didn’t get cleaned up after the flight. Jacqueline isn’t one to tell us one thing and do another. She’s been nothing but honest with us from the beginning.”

“She has. I’m,” Wilder rubbed his hands on his pantlegs, “nervous. She is everything I have waited so long to find and the fact she doesn’t feel the bond to the same degree we feel it is terrifying.” He looked up at the sight of three people entering the lounge where Wilder had managed to secure a quiet corner booth away from the loud partying skiers, thanks to a generous tip to the management. He got up from his seat as they approached and immediately hugged his sister tight. “River.”

“Hey little brother. You look like you’re about ready to jump headfirst into a bucket of rusty razor blades. What is wrong?”

“Jacqueline is supposed to meet us to spend time with us and she’s late. We don’t want to go chasing after her. We want

her to come to us but it’s hard.”

“Good things come to those who wait,” River smiled and released him to hug Rafferty who also stood up to greet her.

“Hello little brother. You look as bad as he does.”

“She doesn’t feel the bond,” Rafferty blurted out. The presence of his big sister making him once again feel like a little boy who relied on her for everything. It seemed age didn’t change this one iota after all this time.

“She doesn’t feel it at all?” Fawn asked from where she

hugged Wilder. “I was sure she felt something in your office.”

“It’s muted,” Wilder admitted. “Incredibly muted. We ran into a bear shifter down in the town,” he spoke lowly. “He hypothesized in under a couple of minutes that she’s put a spell on herself. He thinks in order to protect her heart, following a childhood full of rejection, that she somehow managed to weave a spell of some kind to freeze her own

emotions.”

“Makes sense.” Fawn sighed. “If this is the case, it will take

patience from you both. We all know neither of you are the most patient.”

“We will be,” Rafferty accepted the hug from his mother. “We

will work together. We will figure this out and we will be as patient and as loving as she needs us to be. She is worth it to

us.”

“You love her already,” River said quietly.

“More than anything or anyone in this world. She is strong.

She is resilient. Beautiful inside and out.”

“Witty. Fuck she is witty,” Wilder added. “Cunning and

brilliant. Her mind is sexy as fuck. The rest of her is icing on

an already perfect cake.”

“You two have it bad.”

“We have spent mealtimes and break times with her over the last week or so and each one is much more revealing than the last. I know she is meant to be my mate, and I will not give up ever. If it takes me a thousand years to convince her to stay, then I will be patient and wait.”

“There is a fly in the ointment however,” Wilder spoke after Rafferty’s impassioned speech. “Jacinta.”

“You mentioned this earlier. Jacqueline believes she is the one who took her?”

“Yes. After some of the things we’ve seen, we’re in agreement. I looked into the hospital where Jacqueline was abandoned. It’s about an hour away from a park

where we all went as children. It was during a time when

our grandmother was still on the throne, and she was meeting Jack’s father in neutral territory.” Wilder said to

River. “I haven’t told this to Jacqueline yet because it’s so

circumstantial. However, we would have passed that hospital to go to the park multiple times during meetings with the nannies assigned to us. If she remembered it at all from our

walks from the hotel to the park past the hospital, then it

would have been nothing for her to zip in, drop the baby and

bail.”

“But why?” River asked seriously. “What did she have to gain by causing her parents such heartache?”

“That’s what we need to find out. All I know is she didn’t think

we saw her today watching Jacqueline to come back. We saw

her before she saw us. It wasn’t the face of someone happy

to see someone. She looked furious.”

“Cruel.” Rafferty added. “Her face was cruel. She was looking straight at Jacqueline, not noticing that we were looking at her. Cruel. Something in her is far more broken than anything in her mother. She schooled her features the minute she saw us, but we saw her. Jacqueline isn’t exaggerating when she says Jacinta hates her. The question is why?”

“She was always the baby in the family for decades and then suddenly Winika was pregnant again. Perhaps it was sibling jealousy.”

“There has to be something else to it. She went from

someone we hung out with all the freaking time. She was

with us all the time. Our families were tight, connected. The cold war between our grandparents stopped when Mom and Jack took their thrones. They worked hard to make a unified world, and we were together all the time. Even the day of Jacqueline’s birth, she was with us. Laughing. Having a good time. She was fun. Whatever happened to her that day, changed something in her.”

Fawn spoke softly, “her gift.”

“Her gift,” Fawn commented quietly. “Like Rafferty she has the gift of sight, but she can only see snippets of the future. We all know future can be changed. What if,” Fawn cleared her throat, “the reason she got rid of Jacqueline was because she saw her with you both?”
