Entering the hotel restaurant, Jacqueline was unsurprised to find Jack and Winika already seated at a table staring at the entrance like it was the portal to heaven. The moment their eyes landed on her, Winika was on her feet, her eyes watering but Jack was holding her back, forcing her to sit back down.

Jacqueline considered this might be a start in the right direction as she moved to join them.

Jacqueline, you came.” Winika whispered breathlessly.

Jack commented quietly, we ordered already because we weren’t sure you would show up.

I said I would, she nodded and took a breath. The server approached right away and Jacqueline ordered a coffee and set her hands on the table folded.

Winika seemed confused by the question. Our night?

Yes. Your evening. Did you have a nice evening last night?

Jack chuckled, we did, Jacqueline. Thank you for asking. It was a beautiful evening and we went for a nice long walk

along a nearby trail and recharged our spirits.”

Lovely. I fell asleep on the balcony. In all my life, it never

dawned on me to sleep out in the open. I always presumed I’d get cold. I mean, I was definitely one of those kids who kicked off all her blankets and slept with a fan running constantly but I mean, living in New York I wouldn’t dare

sleep with the window open. Turns out, it’s the catalyst to a

great sleep.

You’ve never slept outside? No camping trips or the like?

Jack continued the conversation while Winika made wide

eyes at her as if this entire topic seemed strange to her.

No. In the homes I grew up in, camping trips were not common place.”

Your brother mentioned you’d had a lot of foster brothers 2/6

and sisters. That must have been difficult. Getting attached and then having to leave.

She shrugged, eventually it stopped hurting by the time I

was a teenager in teenager placements. Most of the time in group homes or foster homes, the girls are meaner than the

ones that get portrayed in movies. You sure as heck don’t want to try to get close to the boys. That’s just trouble waiting to happen.

I’m sorry you went through that,Jack said softly.

I’m not. It made me who I am. I mean do I look back and

think man, I could have had such a better childhood? Sure,

especially in light of all of this,” she waved between them,

but if I’m honest, I don’t think I would have liked growing up in your palace any more than I did any of the homes I was placed in. Not because I don’t think you’d have been good parents,” she quickly lifted her hand to Winika, but because I think I would have been an entirely different person than who I am today. Who I am today isn’t one to want closets the size of small apartments to only store shoes or to accept that as a royal I don’t need to be accountable for my actions. I like the person my life shaped me into, despite growing up with very little.

She smiled at the server who delivered a steaming cup of dark coffee to her, “thank you so much. This smells like exactly what I needed this morning.

Would you like to see the breakfast menu?

No need,” she shook her head, I saw the special board

at the entrance and I saw you have waffles with fruit and whipped cream. I’ll have that.

Winika beamed, that’s what I ordered.”

Jacqueline smiled at her, it feels like a decadent treat. I don’t usually eat out much. Knowing I need to for the next four weeks, I’ll be desperate for some boring rice and chicken by the time I go home. She giggled, aw who am I kidding? No I won’t. I hate cooking.”

Now you sound like Jack,Winika was slowly starting to relax,

going into the kitchen sets his teeth on edge. Some of the

bluest versions of your father involve a kitchen.

Jacqueline giggled at the words and looked at Jack curiously,

is that so?

to eat and by the time he realizes he needs to eat he’s

beyond the capability of waiting for something.

Don’t you have staff who make your meals?

Winika nodded and then spoke softly, for a very long I wasn’t much for eating or adhering to a schedule and while I wallowed, Jack worked. We missed more meals together than we shared.” She looked down into her hands under the table, I’ve not been feeling well for a long time.

I understand.Jacqueline said quietly.

I feel like I’ve been wrapped up in a hazy cloud for too long.” Winika blinked slowly as she looked around. I knew you were alive. I felt it. I was connected to you through the snowbells. I could hear you but I couldn’t find you.Her voice changed slightly as if losing herself to a memory.

Jacqueline watched as Jack rubbed Winika’s back gently.

She came back to us though, Winika. Look she is right here.

The flowers bloom,” Winika said with a faraway look in her eyes. They bloom for my baby.”

She’s right here.Jack whispered again. Look. Right across

the table. She is there.”

Winika stared at Jacqueline for a moment and her eyes watered, but she will not stay, Jack. She thinks we are a danger to her. Are we a danger to her? Was this our fault? Did we put her in harm’s way? I need my flowers. I need to ask my flowers.” She looked at Jack with a panic stricken expression, where are my flowers.

Jacqueline watched sadly as Winika devolved right in front of her and wished with all her might she could somehow fabricate flowers for the woman to cling to. Then with a strange tingling in her fingertips she felt them growing in her hand. They felt like life and yet cold. Alive yet frozen. She stared at them in awe and then she cleared her throat.
