Jack stared in amazement and Winika gasped as she
grabbed them excitedly from Jacqueline’s hands.
“How?” Jack whispered the question softly.
“I just wished I had them for her and they were suddenly growing in my hand.”
“You don’t understand,” Jack was in awe. “Snowbells, this particular strain, are a sacred flower.” He motioned to the white petals which glistened as if painted with glitter,
“We can’t just pull them out of thin air like this. They grow remotely, in special places but they are one of the very few
flowers, plants or blossoms we cannot simply conjure. Only
priestesses can do such things and only with very special
circumstances. It is unheard of to simply to do what you just
did.”
“I knew I could sense her through the flowers.” Winika exclaimed with a smile.

Jack’s words were bouncing around in her mind and
Jaqueline gave Winika the kind of smile one would give an excitable child before looking to Jack again.
“What do you mean?”
“There are three kinds of flowers only incredibly powerful fae can conjure. Snowbells. They contain a lifeforce energy deeply connected to Northern Fae. Passionflower, again,
a special strain the flower which is a deep blood red color,
which contains the lifeforce energy deeply connected to
Southern Fae. The third is specific kind of rose which is often
used for ceremonial purposes. All three really are used in
celebrations such as wedding, funerals, centennials. It’s not
to say we don’t cultivate them and grow them and treasure
them but to find them naturally or to pull them out of thin air is unheard of for anyone who is not part of the temples.”
“Cool.” Jacqueline said with a small smile. “I can make flowers. I can talk to animals. I can move things.”
“You can do all those things?” Jack smiled warmly as Winika was stroking the flowers as if a doll’s hair. “You’ve been
practicing?”

“Wilder and Rafferty have been really helping me to focus. They are teaching me to tune into my energy. They helped me trace the bond I feel with them into my psyche. Rafferty has a very soothing voice for me, almost hypnotic.”
“That is what a good mate should do,” Jack nodded as he gave Winika a doting smile.
“Jack is constantly telling me to stay away from them.”
“He is jealous.” Winika said with sudden clarity.
“That’s icky.”
Jack laughed. “He’s not jealous in a romantic way. He’s jealous they are forging their relationships with you and yet you avoid him like he’s carrying a deadly disease.”
She shifted uncomfortably, “he’s an ass.”
“He is navigating emotions he doesn’t know how to deal with. He always believed you would immediately love him without hesitation. To learn about your past and how many siblings you’ve been exposed to, he confessed last night he feels he’s paying for the sins of someone else.”

“He’s not though,” she protested the comment. “He’s come at me with an energy which is forceful and intimidating. I don’t do well with someone trying to bend me to their will.”
“He’s not trying to bend you,” Winika whispered, “he simply wants you to love him.”
“He wants me to be small to fit into his space. I don’t need to make space for someone who would want me to accept being uncomfortable in order for them to be comfortable. That’s not love, Winika, that’s control. He can learn to love who I am instead of whatever ideal he’s created of me.”
“He said you are blaming him for Jacinta’s behavior,” Jack spoke as if he were trying to broach the subject carefully.
“He defends her actions like she’s correct in the things she’s doing.”
“He did confirm your story from last night about the bear shifter,” he said sadly.
“Good to know you needed to verify my version of events before you believed me.”
“It is my experience that usually when there are two varying 4/7

stories surrounding the same event, it is best to get a third
version of events because the truth is somewhere in all of it.”
“Sure.”
“Jacqueline, do not be angry with me. It isn’t that I didn’t
want to believe you but rather I was given two very different
versions and I needed to investigate further.”
“Well Jacinta was a bigger jerk than Jack was.”
“Those would be big shoes to fill,” Winika said with a giggle. “He can be a big jerk. One of our housekeepers hates him because he’s a perfectionist. When she cleans his room if she doesn’t do it right, he makes her come back and redo it.”
“Well a job should be done right,” Jacqueline sighed.
“I believe it’s more the delivery of his demands for it be fixed,” Jack shook his head. “He’s not good with please and thank you. He is the spoiled rotten crown prince after all.” He tapped Winika’s nose, “I blame you for his poor upbringing.”
“He spent too much time in the barracks with the soldiers
and acts like one.” Winika retorted.

Jacqueline smiled at the exchange. “You love each other very much,” she commented as she watched them.
“Very much,” Winika nodded. “Jack is my strength.”
“You are my world,” Jack smiled at his wife. He looked past her, “here comes the server with your waffles.” His eyes narrowed and then his jaw tightened, “and Jacinta is at the door of the restaurant.”
Winika frowned, “but we asked her to stay away for the morning. Why is she here?”
Jacqueline looked and saw the woman looking around frantically and then waving excitedly from the door, pointing at them and motioning to the hostess she was joining them.
“I can’t do this.”
“You don’t have to.” Jack stood up and rounded the table and put his hand on Jacqueline’s shoulder, “I will send her on her way. Keep your mother company for a moment while I deal with her persistent behavior.”
“I don’t want to come between.”

“Nonsense. She has had breakfast alone with us thousands of
times in her lifetime. This is your first. You are entitled. Stay. I will be right back.” He dropped a kiss to wife’s head and then paused to take a liberty and dropped one on Jacqueline’s unsuspecting forehead.
Jacqueline rubbed her forehead and watched him walk away feeling again the emotion she’d experienced the first day she’d met him when he’d protected her from the twins. Maybe breakfast wasn’t going to be so bad after all.
