Jack returned to the table, slamming into his seat before

Jacqueline could say anything more and cutting off the

women’s conversation. Jacqueline noted that his hands were

a deep shade of blue, and she looked at his face and noted

his ears and nose were the same shade.

“Uh, you okay there Daddy Jack?”

The question from her made him look at her in surprise and a smile tugged his lips, “Daddy Jack?”

“You’re technically my dad and it’s getting really hard to sort

out Jack and Jack.”

“I’ll take it,” he winked and looked at Winika. “Jacinta threw

a temper tantrum in the middle of the hotel lobby like she is

still five years old. I sent her to her room and told her I would

be by to see her when breakfast was done, and she better have a damn good excuse for being a brat.”

“She only wants to spend time with us and Jacqueline.”

“She was told to let us have this time with Jacqueline. We specifically went to her last night after Jack came to us and told us what she’d done down in the lounge trying to disrupt Jacqueline’s date with her mate. We told her to let us facilitate gradually reintroducing the girls when Jacqueline is

a bit more receptive. She deliberately crashed our breakfast

and made it uncomfortable. I fucking furious with her.”

“She’s been missing her sister, Jack,” Winika protested weakly,

shooting a glance at Jacqueline as if begging her to agree.

“I think she’s trying to see if there is anything I remember or if I have any clues which would expose her. She’s terrified I’m going to prove what I already know deep in my gut and so she’s trying to monitor all the conversations I have with you.”

Jack who had just picked up his fork dropped it with

annoyance onto his plate, “Jacqueline, enough. Your sister did not get rid of you.”

“Not for lack of trying,” she made wide eyes as she dropped

her own fork. “You know I really wanted to spend time with you this morning. The twins are right and there is a part of

me which longs to belong to a family and be part of a group 2/6

of people who love me and look out for me. I just don’t think it’s going to work.”

“Jacqueline,” Jack started to back up his anger. “I’m sorry.”

“You have nothing to be sorry for,” she said as she wrestled with her own anger. “You’ve known her for almost a hundred years. You’ve known me a few days and spent less than a handful of hours in my presence. It makes sense you’re going to trust your daughter over a stranger.”

“You’re not a stranger,” he shook his head.

“But I am and she is your beloved child. I won’t be bringing it up again to either of you however, I also don’t think a relationship with you is going to be in my best interests.”

“No. Why?” Winika was clutching her flowers to her chest again, “why?”

“I don’t feel safe with you.” At the comment she saw the pain on Jack’s face. “I wish it were different. I wish with all my heart I felt I was in a place with you where I could be

comfortable to speak my mind and know it’s not going to be met with derision and ridicule. I wanted,” she felt the

emotions clogging her throat, “to have a mom and a dad 3/6

who would love me and believe in me the way you believe

in Jacinta but it’s not going to happen. I don’t trust her to not cause me harm and the way you are refusing to hear me

and to even consider what I intuitively feel as a danger to me

might be valid tells me I am not safe when I’m with you.”

“You can’t mean that.”

“I do.” She set her hands on the table and took a deep

breath. “I will be with the twins as my mates, and I am sure

our paths will cross since you’re businesses with Fawn and Hugh require it. They will ensure that Jacinta stays clear of me. We can be acquaintances but for my own sake, for my

mental health and my wellbeing I cannot pursue a familial

relationship with you.”

“You are my daughter!” he exclaimed angrily. “Why are you

so caught up on this need to be right? I understand Jacinta is

a pain in the ass. She’s spoiled and selfish and frankly I don’t

know many princesses anywhere in the world who are not, but she is not cruel and she would not hurt her own family.”

“It is for this reason, this inability to even try to see it from my perspective, to refuse to investigate or even entertain my theories or fears, that we can’t be family,” she stood up then and smiled softly at Winika, a burning feeling of guilt in her 4/6

eyes. She took a deep breath and exhaled, “I wish it were different Winika. I wish I could be the daughter you long for, but you have a daughter who loves you so very much

already.” She leaned over and kissed the woman’s cheek

softly. “I hope you stay well.”

“No. I don’t accept this,” Jack stood up and rounded the table

pulling her into a tight hug despite her arms hanging limply

at her sides. “You are my daughter, my princess, my blood

and I refuse to simply give in because you are scared of letting us into your heart.”

“I’m not scared of letting you into my heart, Jack. I’m scared of Jacinta destroying me through you and I can’t have that.” She whispered with her cheek pressed to his chest. “I can’t let myself love someone who refuses to listen to me.”

“You’re asking me to choose between my daughters.”

“No. I’m precisely doing the opposite of that. You don’t need to choose Jack. Stick with what you know and already love.” With a strength she didn’t know she could muster, she escaped his hug and grabbing her bag, holding her head up high, she left the restaurant before she embarrassed herself by crying in front of them.
