Coming out of the restaurant, her emotions frazzled,

Jacqueline didn’t hear the woman calling her name. Then

her hand was tugged and she turned wide–eyed to find River standing there.

“Oh, hey, River.”

“Hey. I take it breakfast went bad?” River squeezed her

hands, “you look pretty upset.”

“I can’t seem to keep from insisting Jacinta is a horrible human being and they can’t seem to keep defending her. I

get it. She’s been part of their lives far longer than I have but they immediately shut me down. They won’t even listen to me. The worst part is, I can’t let it go. It’s like every time I am

around them, I need to say it. I can’t stop myself. I realize for

my own peace of mind, I just need to stay away from all of

them. I won’t ever convince them she’s somehow behind my kidnapping and they can’t ever convince me I need to make amends with her as my sister. We’re all too stubborn Laus506

“How can I help?” River swung her hands gently. “What do you need from me as your newest sister and friend?”

“I don’t even know.” She rubbed her temple. “I feel like I kicked a puppy by walking away from Winika but my need for self–preservation is outweighing my need to console her.” She looked at River sadly, “does this make me a bad person?”

“No. It makes you strong, Jacqueline. It takes a lot of strength to stand your ground and advocate for yourself.”

“She tried to crash the breakfast.” Jacqueline sighed. “How can they not see her behavior as suspicious?”

“Can I tell you something?”

“Anything.”

“I used to hate her.”

“What?” Jacqueline stared at River in shock.

“I always got stuck watching over her and the twins and she was such a whiny little brat, and she would stomp and throw tantrums to get whatever she wanted. As she got older, she

became sneakier in her tantrums. She would get nannies fired for shit she did. She would see something one of the dignitaries children had and would find a way to get it for herself. We’re all spoiled. I can’t lie. It’s part of being a princess and royalty. We get what we want when we want

it and usually there is nothing to stop us from taking what we want. It gets old and eventually we all grow up a bit and realize there is more to life than instant gratification.

Our parents, I mean like mine and twins, always taught

us the value behind hard work and how much something holds more meaning when it’s something we earned. It’s why Wilder has his company and Rafferty has his. I own my own businesses but not to the degree they do because I’m queen in training. Jacqueline through,” River shook her head, “she doesn’t work. She doesn’t do anything but live off her parent’s, get whatever she wants and dress in her frilly dresses and flounce around her palace or parties. It grates on me but over the years, I learned to simply tolerate her because I knew it was never something I would ever see changed in my lifetime.”

“So, what you’re saying is she’s never needed to actually be held accountable for a damn thing in her lifetime?”

“Yup.”

“Ugh. It almost makes me feel sorry for her if she wasn’t such a bitch.” Jacqueline sighed loudly. She caught sight of Jack coming down the stairs and she grabbed River and yanked her to hide behind a wall. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to jerk you like that, but the rest of her fan club is coming this way and I

simply cannot today.”

“Why don’t we get out of here?” River asked with a smile. “You’ve never gone skiing right?”

“Nope.”

“I’ll teach you. Let’s go. We can hit the bunny hills first and if you get the hang of it, which I’m sure you will because you are very graceful and not clumsy at all, we can move to the harder hills. I bet by the time you leave this small town in four weeks, you’ll be nearly as good as your client.”

“No way,” she laughed at River’s words. “I watched some of

his skiing and he does these jump things which make my

stomach roll.”

“Adrenaline junky? He sounds fun.” River giggled. “Come on.

Want to go connect with the outdoors?”

“I think I really do.” Jacqueline nodded. 4/6

“Let’s go to your room and get your things.”

“My room is now Wilder’s room. I’m sharing with them. They put my clothing away, including my underwear.”

“Why?” River frowned.

“My room apparently was unbefitting the mate of the Vaughn

twins. I mean, once I saw the size of Wilder’s room and

realized mine would fit in the bathroom of his, I understood

why he was so offended. Rafferty was furious. So now I’m bunking with Wilder.”

“Why didn’t they give you Rafferty’s room and they bunk

together?”

At the question from River, Jacqueline’s mouth opened and closed in confusion and then she gasped, “those snakes. They

bamboozled me. They made everything happen so fast I

didn’t even think of it. I was exhausted and they were taking

care of everything and setting me outside with a glass of

wine and fresh air.”

River snickered, “they played you like a fiddle.”

Jacqueline shook her head, but she was smiling, “they did

but you know, I’m not even mad about it. They took such

loving care of me last night. Jack and Jacinta pretty much chased us out of the lounge. They really made me feel better and I fell asleep outside. They put me to bed and were very respectful.”

“You’re starting to appreciate them.”

“I am. I think I can see myself being with them,” she blushed,

“as mates. They’re good to me and it makes me want to be good to them.”

“Aw, I love this!” River flung her arms around her and hugged

her tight. “Let’s go up to your room then and get your gear and we’ll go skiing.”

“I don’t have gear. I don’t have skis.”

“Yes you do. Wilder brought them. Maybe you didn’t notice but I did.” River smiled, “he is thinking of your needs, the way a good mate should.”
