“You are a Frost.”
The comment from Jack made Jacqueline look at him
curiously. “Uh, no shit?”
“I just mean, if you’re going to go speak to a priestess, why not go to the temple in the Northern Realm.”
“Do they not simply do the same things? Worship a deity in a
temple?”
“Yes and no,” Jack shrugged as he rubbed the back of his neck, “but winter has already begun in the North. Your powers are going to be amplified the more you’re exposed to the elements of the north. I’m expecting the snow here on the mountain is bringing things forward.”
“That and being surrounded by fae,” Fawn commented seriously. “The more she is around her community, the more her powers will come forth.”

“Let me take you to the Northern Temple,” Jack sat back down and stare at his sister beseechingly. “If the high priestess cannot give you an answer, then the twins can take you to the one in the Southern Realm. I think the combination of being in the land where your family is from, surrounded by snow and cold, in the temple of the creator, with your blood relative at your side, the priestess will be able to bring your powers forth and maybe help with figuring out what is going
on.”
“Will my mates not give me the same thing as my brother?”
Hugh spoke softly, “you haven’t fully accepted them yet. There is no denying the blood relationship, but the mate relationship is contingent on acceptance, love, lust,” he said bluntly. “You’re holding yourself back still with them and while you’ve come a long way over the last week or so, there is still an emotional barrier between you and the twins. I know you don’t like Jack very much,” Hugh shot Jack a withering look when he gave an angry hiss, “you haven’t done anything to deserve her friendship until the last fifteen minutes, so no, she doesn’t like you much.”
“I will fix it.” Jack said earnestly. “I will Jacqueline.”

“I don’t know,” she whispered nervously. “Why can’t we all go?”
“Too many people can overwhelm the priestess. If she’s trying to figure out what is happening with you and she has everyone in her space it might make it difficult for her to read your aura and your powers. Because we haven’t sealed our bond and completed our claiming for the priestess, it’s like having three people in the room. We can do it, for sure, but Jack makes sense that if he takes you, it will.
“My aura? It sounds so hippy dippy.”
“We’re literally fairies,” Fawn laughed at the derisive description from Jacqueline. “Love, flowers and magic.”
“I guess.” She gave a loud sigh. “Fine. I’ll do it. I want to know what it is inside me that is making me not feel the way Wraith did. Bar might be right, he might be wrong but the more I spend time with you both,” she looked at the twins, “I feel more but it’s not what I just witnessed.”
“Who the fuck is Wraith?” Jack asked and then frowned, “not the skinny kid from the plane.”
“Yeah. He’s River’s mate,” Rafferty grinned. “Wilder went to 3/13

check on him and he was stuck in a room where three guys were fighting. He’s a lover not a fighter and he was fucking terrified. We brought him up here to calm him down. River dragged him up to her room.”
Jack was appalled, “he’s human. Are you saying the queen of the Southern Realm will have a human mate?”
“I dare you to criticize him in front of her. Go for it,” Wilder said with a sneer.
“I’d be more concerned with the age gap.” Rafferty made a
face.
“He’s only a few years younger than I am, Rafferty,” Jacqueline commented folding her arms with annoyance.
“Sweetheart, you are leaps and bounds older than him. Your
spirit is what humans call an old soul. Where Wraith is still not
quite out of his teenage dirtbag phase, you are more mature
than most.”
“Thank you, I think?” she made a face at Rafferty’s comment.
“It’s a compliment,” Jack was laughing, “a weird one but it’s a compliment.” He held his hand out to his sister. “Do you want 4/13

to go?”
“Where?”
He frowned impatiently, “to the priestess?”
“Now?”
“The sooner the better.”

“But” she looked at her mates, “are you sure you can’t come?”
“I hate to say it, but Jack is right. This makes more sense. Our priestess is as powerful as theirs, but the combination of a familial relationship, the snow and the land will help the priestess help you. It’s similar to taking performance enhancing drugs,” Wilder gave a laugh at the way she shoved him. “I was thinking skiing not Viagra.”
“Oh,” she blushed at his words, “you’re not funny.”
“I’m a little funny,” he kissed her cheek noisily.
“Not really,” she snickered at his crestfallen expression. She reached a hand to Jack, and he pulled her into a standing

position. Jacqueline looked at the way their hands were joined and wrinkled her nose.
“You don’t like holding my hand, little sister?”
She made a face, “the opposite. It feels right, like family.”
“Because you’re starting to feel the fae bonds,” Jack said seriously. “I fucked up Jac,” he shortened her name and tapped her nose.
“Don’t call me Jac.”
“You’re the other Jac,” he laughed at her protesting. “Jacinta can’t be a Jack, but you can be. You’re also as stubborn as both Dad and I.”
“Why can’t she be a Jack?”
“Her name has the soft c. You have a name like ours. It was
why we were stoked when Mom picked it out.”
“Another reason for Jacinta to resent me,” she snorted.
“Shit. I didn’t think of that.”

She looked at Wilder and Rafferty who rose from the sofa. “I’ll let you know as soon as I’m back. Hopefully I’ll have
answers.”
“I know you will.” Wilder kissed her forehead as Rafferty
kissed her cheek.
“That’s so fucking weird.” Jack commented. “Your lips get way too close as siblings. There is no way I’d be able to share my
mate with a sibling. It’d be one thing if it were a friend or a
buddy, but my brother?” He made a gagging noise.
When Jacqueline looked at him though there was a glimmer in his eyes, teasing and taunting the twins and for the first time she got a glimpse of what they were like when they’d been friends years ago.
“Keep it up Jack and I’ll give you explicit details of how your baby sister made sure her twin mates enjoyed her
ambidextrous –”
Wilder doubled over as Jack punched him in the belly.
“Finish that sentence, you puny punk,” Jack grimaced.
“So much violence,” Jacqueline snickered as she looked at 7/13

Wilder, “you kind of deserved that. You always go too far.”
“Part of my charm,” he gasped out.
“It’s really not,” Rafferty snorted as he slapped his brother’s back. “I agree with Jacqueline. You tend to push boundaries
too far.”
“Be careful with that, Rafferty,” Jack was smirking, “I wouldn’t want to be stuck in a trio with a guy like him.”
“Stop trying to drive a wedge, Jack,” Jacqueline called
him out. “I can feel it from you. You’re being deliberately antagonizing to get them squabbling.”
“You feel that?” Jack grinned down at her. “That’s good. You
feel the sibling connection.”
“Sibling connection?”
“Yes. All siblings who are emotionally connected feel a bond. Wilder and Rafferty have a bond closer than most. They can probably hear each other’s thoughts they’re so close. Siblings.
tend to sense emotions.”
“If that’s the case, why can’t you feel when Jacinta is being a 8/13

duplicitous bitch?”
Jack pulled his head back in surprise at the question. “What?”
“The day at the palace when I saw her, I felt her animosity right away, yet you felt nothing but affection for her. I felt scared and intimidated by her hatred because I was the odd one out. I felt your anger because you weren’t even trying to hide it. I thought it was simply my street sense but if it’s a sibling thing, why don’t you feel it with her? Can you feel it with me?”
“Yes. It’s why I’m fucking frantic around you. I feel the anger and the bitterness in you. I feel you pulling away and the angst each time we’re around. I’m desperate to ease that in you.”
“So, what are you not feeling with Jacinta? When she’s around, do you not feel her animosity?”
He seemed truly perplexed by the question and then he frowned, “I think you’re not the only one who needs to talk to the priestess. I’ve always been so good at reading her moods and her expressions that I didn’t realize I wasn’t sensing her emotions but rather just reading her. When did that stop?”

“My guess,” Jacqueline snorted, “is about the time she dumped her other sibling and offended her creator by betraying her family.”
“You would have been so consumed with your own grief, helping your parents and dealing with the investigation that you never noticed Jacinta’s lack of bond with you.” Wilder shrugged. “It’s all making so much sense now in hindsight.”
Jacqueline grumbled, “you were all looking in the wrong places.”
“Shit,” Jack muttered.
“Well yeah, shit.”
“No. I mean shit, Mom and Dad are coming down the stairs. If you want to avoid them, we should get out of here.”
She looked towards the stairs and noted Winika searching the lobby and when their eyes connected the longing on the older woman’s face made an arise in Jacqueline’s stomach. Winika was clutching her flowers to her chest.
“Mom!” Jacinta’s voice called out from higher up the stairs, distracting the couple momentarily.

Jack was immediately pulling Jacqueline out a side door from the lobby and into the fresh air.
“That was slick.” She mocked him as he dragged her through
a snowbank towards a pathway.
“Did you want to have another face off with the three of
them? I know I don’t. Dad knows me better than I know
myself. He’d know I was lying to him about what I’m up to.”
“Are you lying? What are you lying about?”
“If I’m telling him I’m trying to get you to hear me out and convince you that Jacinta isn’t the enemy, he’s going to know I’m lying but it’s the only story I can use with Jacinta to make her not think I’m betraying her and giving away that we suspect her. You’re right. Until Dad has evidence, we can’t tell him anything. We need the proof. If Jacinta knows we’re onto
her, she’s going to start burying her trail even more than she already has.”
Jacqueline stopped and grabbed his hand and made him look at her. She noted the very real concern on his face and the way he was shooting worried looks behind them.

“You really believe me.”
“I do Jac,” he held her hands in his and squeezed them, “I believe you. I’m sorry it took me so long and I’m sorry I almost lost my chance to be the brother my little sister deserves but I believe you. Circumstantial evidence or not, I
know she was involved somehow. Whether she hid someone
in the room or personally dumped you at the hospital, I’m not
sure but she did it. It was her. Mom and Dad won’t believe us
though Jac without the proof.”
“Stop calling me Jac.”
“I can’t. You’re a Jac. Like it or not.” He squeezed her hands in
his. “Are you ready for this?”
“For what?”
“Another trip with me to the Northern Realm. This time we’re
not going to my shoe closet though. We’re going to the
temple.”
“I’m ready. Let’s go get some answers.”
