Jacqueline smiled at Hugh’s instant welcoming of Bar.

“I know your father,” Fawn said with a twinkle in her eye. “He is not going to approve.”

“Wait until he finds out he answers to Jacqueline now.” Bar retorted with a smirk. “He likes to think he’s the apex predator but she’s going to eat him up like a bunny.”

Fawn nodded, “this is an interesting choice, Jacqueline,” she waved at Jacinta. “The king might not like this.”

“Then he can leave.” Jack commented dryly. “Jacinta was always so worried about not being part of things, well let’s have her absolutely be sidelined for a bit.”

“Let’s get things set up,” Jacqueline commented as she looked around the back yard. “We’re definitely going to need more snow,” she waved her hand carelessly overhead and let big wet Яakes begin to fall from the sky. “Now we don’t need 19:20

“I think that’s a lovely idea.” Fawn agreed not bothering to ask any further questions about Jacinta.

Soon they had sections cordoned off for each team and the atmosphere was lighthearted and full of laughter despite Jacqueline’s increasing nervousness over the impending arrival of her parents. Furtive glances in Jack’s direction told her he too was looking over his shoulder, worried about the

impact seeing Jacinta as an ice sculpture would have on their

mother.

“You are reading me very well, sister,” Jack said suddenly as he caught her once again looking at him sideways. “I can feel our bond growing, that sibling kinship. You are worried about me. There is no need. I am where I want to be, supporting who I want to support and grateful you didn’t simply use the knife she drew on you to end her life.”

Suddenly Wraith spoke up, “as the only human in this group, I just want to say, this is the coolest thing I’ve ever done. I’m literally standing in the middle of a forest clearing, in the 2/12

“My own family never did stuff like this. My entire life has

been working on ways to get away from family. This feeling

of belonging and this desire in here,” he patted his chest, “to

really genuinely want to spend time with all of you, is really

special. I’ve never really wanted to be around other people. Usually people want something from me, but you all just

want me here, to be with me.”

“River kind of wants something from you,” Wilder commented

with a smirk.

“Yeah his dick,” Rafferty held his fist out for Wilder to punch.

River grabbed a chunk of snow and formed it into a ball and threw it smacking Wilder right in the side of the head.

“Did you just hit me with a snowball?”

“He was giving a nice speech about his feelings, and you ruined it with your crassness!” River stomped as she watched

her brother pick up his own mittfuls of snow to form a ball.

She pointed him with mock anger, “don’t you dare.” She

shrieked when she tried to duck away from the snowball and it still caught her on the shoulder. She bent and scooped up

another handful, throwing it at him but then accidentally catching Rafferty with it.

River ran to hide behind Jacqueline as the twins immediately were forming new snowballs with the intent of pelting her.

“Don’t hide behind me!” Jacqueline giggled as she tried to get out of River’s grasp without real effort.

“Don’t hurt mate!” Orson’s voice snarled from deep inside

Bar’s chest.

“Oh, she’s the snow queen,” Wilder grinned, “besides, I think I can get River from here without getting Jacqueline.” He lobbed the snowball and it hit Jacqueline in the face.

Her mouth opened in surprise as Bar growled and Rafferty suddenly dropped his snowball.

“I am so sorry,” Wilder was trying not to laugh as he delivered 4/12

“Oh, he is so not sorry,” River snickered from where she was still firmly planted behind Jacqueline.

“You have shitty aim, Mr. Vaughn,” Jacqueline commented

as she didn’t even bother to bend down to collect snow and

simply created snowballs right in her hands.

“Oh, that’s a very cool trick!” Wraith squealed excitedly.

Jacqueline threw both snowballs at the same time and hit Wilder in the chest, the snow splattering up to his chin while she lifted an eyebrow in his direction.

“It’s like that?”

“It is!” she nodded as she quickly created two more

snowballs and whipped them in his direction but one of them. went askew in her overzealous delivery and hit Rafferty’s

shoulder.

River giggled as Jacqueline immediately had more snowballs in her hands and was holding them defensively.

Rafferty threw a snowball and it went wide when Jacqueline 5/12

used her magic to create a gust of wind, but it went towards Fawn. Hugh stepped in front of it to stop it from hitting his

mate and then looked at Rafferty.

“You threw snow at your mother?”

“Jacqueline did it with the wind!” Rafferty protested as his father began collecting big palmfuls of snow.

“Jacqueline would never!” Hugh said with his eyes glistening with laughter. “I think it’s time I remind you boys who your old man is.”

“Oh this is going to be good.” Wilder snorted at his father’s words. “Emphasis on old there, gramps.” Wilder groaned as the snowball struck him square in the shoulder as he half–turned away. “You put some heat into that one. Do you think you’re playing for the major leagues with that fastball?” he ducked behind Rafferty as the second ball got thrown and it caught Rafferty in the back of the head.

“Damn, that one hurt!” Rafferty was already getting ready

to retaliate when he was struck in the backside by another wayward ball of snow. He looked incredulously at his mother, “did you just throw snow at my butt?”

Rafferty pointed at her and then threw his snowball in her direction. Nobody was surprised when Hugh took the hit for

her.

“Forever my champion,” Fawn giggled as she kissed Hugh’s

cheek.

Snow hit Hugh’s forehead and splattered all over Fawn’s

face.

Suddenly it was chaos as everyone joined in the snowball fight. Jacqueline racing to hide behind Bar while River and Wraith were ducking behind trees for cover. Snowballs were flying at rapid speeds and the sound of laughter carried out through the woods.

Then without warning Jack and Winika appeared in the middle of the clearing right as Jack was throwing a snowball at Bar and it caught his father in the back of the head.

The group went quiet with the exception of the sound of Fawn’s giggle breaking the silence. Winika’s responding little laugh made the king look to his queen in mock consternation 7/12

and she slowly crouched down, grabbed a handful of snow, and pulled his shirt out and dropped it down the front before

patting it into his skin.

Jacqueline’s head fell back as a loud laugh erupted from her chest as Winika immediately shrieked at her husband’s growl and ran towards her son for protection.

The game was still on, Jacqueline decided as they all chased each other around, throwing snowballs and tackling one another. She had the snow swirling around them, and it

provided the perfect foil to hide Jacinta from her parents‘

view. It also amplified the laughter and the happiness

surrounding the group as they all chased one another,

screaming with delight. Jacqueline knew her sister might not be able to see everything clearly through the snow

squall, but she could hear it loud and clear. Her jealousy and sadness were felt in Jacqueline’s mind, but she pushed it

away.

Eventually Wilder held his hands up, “truce. I give up. I’ve taken more hits to the face than anyone here.”

“Because that face is annoyingly too good looking.” Bar grunted as he threw another snowball to catch Wilder’s

cheek. 8/12

“We should start building our snowmen now!” Wraith

exclaimed excitedly.

“How are you not out of breath, human boy?” Rafferty

mocked him.

“Tip top shape because I’m an athlete, fairy,” Wraith threw a snowball and caught Rafferty in the leg. “You can’t make me feel bad for being human, brother, because my mate has already told me I’m built better than most fae.” He rubbed his hands along his flat stomach. “I’ll keep this body in tiptop shape just for her.”

“Things I never wanted to know,” Hugh said with a grimace.

“Also, I might be human but at least I’m not a fairy competing with a bear shifter for a spot in my woman’s bed. He gives off way too much big dick energy for me to ever want to contemplate what it is you can’t compare to in the sack. At least River only has one of me. Poor Jac has three of you!”

Bar laughed, “it’s not a competition, Wraith. We all bring different things to the table, or the bed, as it were.”

“We definitely need to change the topic,” Jacqueline was

blushing furiously as her parents were watching the exchange and her brother was scrunching his nose up disgustedly.

“Question,” Jack asked suddenly, “my wife is pregnant and it’s making me wonder, when Jac pushes out your offspring Bar, will it be a baby or a fur ball?”

Bar lunged at him and the two men were laughing and rolling in the snow, landing dangerously close to the icy version of Jacinta.

Their movements made Winika gasp and the king’s eyes

narrow.

“What the hell?”

“Oh, that’s Jacinta,” Jacqueline called out carelessly, “she tried to stab me with a knife. I brought her here to be part of our evening without ruining our evening.”

Winika raced to her daughter and stared in disbelief at the frozen countenance. Jack’s pace was more leisurely as he

approached.

“She is unharmed in there?” he called out to Jacqueline. 10/12

“Yes, Daddy Jack. She is unharmed. Uncomfortable for certain. Definitely unhappy. Most assuredly unharmed.”

He lifted his hand to the knife and shook his head, “she is lucky you didn’t retaliate by putting this in her chest. You have Frost blood in your veins, Jacqueline, and we are meant to survive. I am impressed you showed restraint and simply didn’t kill her.”

“I couldn’t kill her knowing it would make Winika sad.”

Winika walked closer to the statue and tugged on Jack’s arm, “lift me up. I need to see her face better.”

Jack did as his wife commanded and held her aloft and

watched curiously as his wife traced her fingers around the features of their daughter frozen in time.

“I love you Jacinta, but I am very, very angry with you right now. It is a good thing you are in this block of ice because I feel I would say things I would regret later if you were out here arguing and making excuses. I do not know how long Jacqueline intends to keep you here like this but while you are in there, I want you to know, I am so very disappointed in your behavior.”

“Ugh,” Wilder whispered from next to Jacqueline, “nothing worse than the disappointment speech.”

“You would know. You’ve heard it often enough.” Fawn grunted at him without remorse as his mouth dropped open in shock.

Winika turned around to look at the crowd, “I thought we were building snow sculptures. Let’s not let this ruin a night of

fun.”

Jacqueline wondered what it was Winika learned when she

went to the temple and decided whatever it was, she was grateful.
