Chapter Two Hundred Thirty Seven
Talon hesitated. Then he released a long breath and sat on the couch beside her. Diana waited until he had settled.
“First, I need you to tell me exactly what you were able to read.”
Talon frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I need to know which part of the letter was meant for everyone and which part was meant only for me.”
Talon looked at the paper again. Then his eyes returned to Diana.
“Only for you?”
She nodded. Talon’s expression became thoughtful.
“So the magic surrounding the letter…”
“Was probably meant to conceal part of the message from anyone other than its intended recipient.”
Talon leaned back. He looked almost impressed. Almost.
“I suppose that explains why I couldn’t sense anything dangerous when I inspected it.”
Diana nodded.
“Now, tell me what you read.”
Talon took a moment to recall the message.
“She said that she gave birth several months ago.”
Diana smiled.
“Yes.”
“That the baby is a boy.”
“Yes.”
“And that both mother and child are healthy.”
Diana nodded again. Talon studied her expression.
“It is from her, isn’t it?”
Diana looked down at the letter. There was still no name. No signature. No address. But she knew. The magic was familiar, and the words were filled with the quiet happiness of someone who had finally been given the life she had once believed was impossible.
“Yes,” Diana answered softly. “It is from her.“Talon released a breath.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then he looked at Diana’s stomach.
“So she had her son.”
Diana smiled.
“She did.”
“And he is healthy?”
“Yes.”
Talon nodded slowly.
“Good.”
Diana looked at him in surprise. Talon noticed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“You expected me to be upset?”
Diana hesitated. Talon sighed.
“I told you I understood why you helped them, Diana. That doesn’t mean I agree with everything you did, but I am not going to be angry because an innocent child was born safely.
His hand moved gently over her belly.
“Our pups will be born soon. I would never wish for another father or mother to lose their child.”
Diana’s expression softened. She placed her hand over his.
“Thank you.”
Talon nodded toward the letter.
“But that isn’t everything, is it?”
“No.”
His expression immediately became serious again.
“What else did she say?”
Diana took a deep breath.
“She mentioned her mate.”
Talon went still.
“What about him?”
Diana could feel the change in his body. The Alpha King had returned. His shoulders straightened, and his eyes sharpened.
“Diana, is he becoming dangerous again?”
“No.”
“Has the curse returned?”
“No, Talon. The curse has not returned.”
“She said he can no longer summon darkness, control the elements, create barriers, or use any of the spells he once knew.”
“He is no longer a Black Witch?”
