Chapter 139

Was he originally from Northside all along?
Zoe frowned in confusion for a split second before her eyes widened. “If he’s a Northside local, then the mastermind could be from Northside too.”
Vivian smirked. “Smart girl.”
“I’ll have the team dig into it immediately!”
Zoe took two steps toward the door before suddenly turning back. “Oh, by the way… when came up earlier, I saw Dr. Granger.”
Vivian was surprised he hadn’t left yet, but she simply replied, “Let him sit there if he wants. Parking isn’t allowed out front. Have security go charge him a fee.”
When it was time to clock out, she intentionally waited until the office cleared out before leaving.
Thankfully, the car out front was gone.
Vivian gripped her keys, headed to the parking lot, and drove back to The Sterling Manor.
Silas wasn’t home yet. The moment she walked through the door, Old Mr. Sterling dragged her into his study for a game of chess.
Losing two games for every one she won was her foolproof strategy for keeping the elderly happy.
“I can tell that if you were born in ancient times, Old Mr. Sterling, you would have been a brilliant, strategic general.”
“Even in modern times, I practically am!”
The old man boasted proudly. “Back in the day, when I carried a rifle into battle, I had the enemy wetting their pants and running for the hills.”
Vivian offered a sweet, obedient smile. “No wonder you raised someone as exceptional as Silas. It’s just a shame…”
She lowered her head, her voice dropping into a somber whisper. “He doesn’t seem to like me very much.”
“He doesn’t like you?”
The old man took one look at the girl’s face and immediately knew something was wrong.
“That boy is as dense as a brick! If he doesn’t like you, who could he possibly like? That

spoiled brat, Grace Gifford? Impossible! That was just an illusion brought on by his youth!”.
Vivian stared at him, bewildered. “You seem to know him very well.”
“Of course I know him!”
Old Mr. Sterling huffed. “Don’t you worry. I made you two stay here at The Manor so you could nurture your feelings for each other. You go upstairs and rest. Leave the rest to me.
If nothing else, Vivian was genuinely curious.
What exactly was the old man planning?
Silas arrived home at half-past seven.
After changing his shoes in the entryway, he heard hushed whispers coming from the dining room. Old Mr. Sterling and George had their heads together, muttering about something.
And that woman wasn’t around?
His brow twitched slightly as he went to wash his hands before sitting down at the table.
Old Mr. Sterling watched his every move, his eyes wide with disbelief. “Don’t you feel like something’s missing? Are you really just going to sit there and eat?”
