Perhaps it was her final shred of dignity as a wealthy heiress.
She said in a quiet voice, “I’m fine now. You and Miss Fairchild should head back.”
She had expected Silas to say something, but he said absolutely nothing. Leaving behind a brief “Rest well,” he turned and walked out.
Vivian raised an eyebrow and quickly followed.
Outside.
Silas stopped in his tracks and instructed Simon, “Notify the Giffords. Don’t leave until their people arrive.”
“Yes, sir.”
With that, the matter was concluded.
On the drive back, Vivian stayed behind the wheel, her eyes periodically flicking toward the man in the passenger seat.
His eyes were closed. She couldn’t tell if he was asleep or if he simply had zero interest in communicating with her.
Truth be told, even after all these days, Vivian still couldn’t figure him out.
If he still had feelings for Grace, he certainly hadn’t shown her an ounce of mercy.
But if he was truly heartless…
It seemed anything involving Grace still managed to provoke a reaction from him.
Was he really just holding a grudge because his pride had been wounded when she rejected his confession?
“It was my fault for embarrassing Silas. It’s only right… that he’s angry.”
Back in the hospital, Grace lay in bed, her mother, Jillian Gifford, sitting beside her.
Jillian was both deeply concerned for her daughter’s health and fiercely frustrated by her foolishness. Only today did she find out that Silas Sterling had actually confessed to her daughter.
“If you knew you hurt his pride, then why act so stubborn? The fact that Silas came to see you proves you’re still in his heart, and you… you just chased him away!”
“Then what am I supposed to do?”
Grace bit her lip hard, a mess of anger, resentment, and hurt.

Facing her mother, she finally snapped. “Mom, I’m a living, breathing person too! Do you expect me to throw away every shred of my dignity just to beg for his favor? I…”
“How is that throwing away your dignity?” Jillian cut her off sharply, her voice dropping to a serious octave. “Do you realize who Silas Sterling is? He’s a man who could make all of Northside tremble with a single word! The Sterling family is simply low-profile, not lacking in power!”
“Do you know how many women would kill for the chance to throw themselves at him? But you, you took all those years of affection and completely trampled on them! He confessed to you, and you played hard to get. If you think you have so many better options, let’s see you find a man who can even compare to him!”
Grace clenched her fists tightly, her voice hoarse. “He won’t… He won’t truly give up on me.
“Why wouldn’t he?”
Jillian let out a heavy sigh. “Didn’t you say he already has another woman by his side?”
It was true.
He already had Vivian.
