The Stand-In Who Burned the Script novel Chapter 224

Chapter 224

After firing off the message, he tossed his phone aside and took his new fling out to some trendy restaurant they’d never been to.

When Silas received the audio clip, he was en route to the airport.

He glanced at his screen, his expression dangerously calm

Simon, currently the only person alive who knew Silas had regained his sight, noticed the way his boss’s thumb was slowly tracing the edge of his phone. A knot of dread formed in his stomach.

“Mr. Sterling, is everything okay?”

The man looked up, his gaze fixing on the traffic light ahead. “It’s green,” he said coldly.

Simon immediately snapped his eyes back to the road and slammed on the gas.

Their flight was at six-thirty.

Inside the quiet VIP lounge, business elites were bustling about-typing away on laptops or taking hushed calls. Their corner was the only exception. They were doing absolutely nothing, yet the air around them was thick with a suffocating tension.

Simon discreetly stretched his neck and peeked over at his boss-

Silas was staring blankly into space, aimlessly toying with his phone.

Screen on. Screen off.

Over and over.

He looked like a man waiting for a call, or perhaps agonizing over whether to make one himself.

Finally, boarding time arrived.

“Mr. Sterling, they’re calling our flight.”

The man’s hands stilled abruptly. He lowered his gaze. “Yeah.”

For the entire flight, Simon was a bundle of nerves, terrified of accidentally setting off the ticking time bomb sitting next to him.

Thankfully, they landed without a hitch and checked into their hotel by nine.

Everything went smoothly.

After reviewing the next day’s itinerary, Simon carefully gauged his boss’s mood. “Mr. Sterling, you should get some rest. Shall I wake you at eight tomorrow morning?”

Though they had traveled to Newport for an event, they also had a meeting scheduled with a key business partner.

Silas grunted an acknowledgment and turned away.

He took a single step before freezing in his tracks.

Looking back, he raised a hand. “Find out where she is right now.”

She?

Miss Fairchild.

Relief washed over Simon as he hastily agreed and scrambled out of the room.

Silas walked into his suite. The hotel was a property of Sterling Enterprises, and the top-floor presidential suite offered a commanding, panoramic view of the entire city.

He had spent so much time engulfed in darkness recently that even without the lights on, he instantly adjusted to his surroundings.

He stood motionless by the window for an eternity.

His phone vibrated.

A text from Simon: Mr. Sterling, Miss Fairchild is staying at the HL Hotel, about three miles from here. Should I let her know you’re in town?

Silas replied: No need.

His gaze darkened slightly as he tossed his phone onto the couch.

Unbuttoning his shirt as he walked, he headed straight for the shower.

The night passed in dead silence. At exactly eight the next morning, Simon knocked on the suite door.

When Silas answered, Simon realized his boss looked even worse than the day before.

Silas washed up and changed into his suit with mechanical efficiency, and the two headed

out to meet their business associate.

Normally, when the CEO personally attended a meeting, Simon didn’t have to say a word.

But today, his boss seemed completely detached from reality.
