Chapter 269
Vivian pouted, studying his expression carefully to make sure he wasn’t genuinely angry before
replying, “I’ve lived twenty-five years without ever cooking a single meal. The only two times I’ve ever tried were to make you happy. You can’t just brush that off.”
As her words faded, the room fell silent for two seconds.
The man finally looked up and met her gaze dead-on.
Across the short distance, his eyes were as sharp as a sniper’s laser, locking onto her with intense precision.
“I didn’t know the great Miss Fairchild was not only an expert at throwing tantrums but also a master of guilt-tripping.”
“I am not.” Vivian licked her lips, feeling a sudden, inexplicable wave of guilt. “I just want you to acknowledge that I’m trying. I genuinely gave it my best shot. You’re a grown man, there’s no need to be dragging your feet like this.”
Silas narrowed his eyes dangerously. “Dragging my feet?”
“…Ah.”
Since the words were already out, Vivian had no choice but to bite the bullet and finish her thought. “I’m your woman. Besides, being with me isn’t exactly a raw deal for you. I’m always the one taking the initiative to sweet-talk you. Don’t you think you’re being a little unfair…”
Her voice grew quieter the more she spoke.
The hesitation didn’t just stem from the oppressive aura the man was giving off, but also from her own lack of confidence.
“Never mind, I’m done talking.”
Vivian muttered softly, but just loud enough for the man to hear.
“If I have to be the one who tries harder, then fine. I know you have a terrible temper, but you’re a good man at your core, and you’ve helped me a lot. In any relationship, someone has to be the one to step up. I don’t mind being that person. It’s fine.”
Her soft, airy voice sounded incredibly forgiving on the surface, but every single syllable dripped with grievance and sorrow, as if he had cruelly mistreated her.
Silas let out a low chuckle, though it was impossible to tell what he found so amusing.
A moment later.
He stood up.
His long legs moved deliberately, step by step, until he reached the sofa.
Vivian looked up. The man’s towering figure stood right in front of her, the overhead lights tracing the hard lines of his body, making him look as though he were glowing.
He leaned over, planting one knee on the sofa, a movement that trapped her completely within his

space.
One hand shot out, gripping her chin.
“Vivian.”
She blinked, waiting for his next words.
Silas’s deep, dark pupils looked as though they had already seen through all her lies, like a predator watching its prey hopelessly struggle in a trap.
“This ‘effort’ you keep bringing up is nothing but a bunch of fabricated nonsense and endless games. Unfortunately for you, you aren’t quite beautiful enough to make me lose my mind.”
A ruthless edge glinted in his eyes, masking an emotion that was completely illegible. “Just like you said, if you wanted to reel in any other man, all you’d have to do is crook a finger. If you were simply looking for protection, there are plenty of men in this city who can rival Jonah Granger. So why does it absolutely have to be me?”
“Because whatever it is you’re after, I’m the only one who has it!”
