Chapter 280
Silas stared at the phone screen for a long time before turning it off and placing it back exactly where he found it.
He stood up and walked over to the window. On the table sat a bottle of liquor Simon had brought along with the rest of the supplies that afternoon. He had to admit, alcohol was a wonderful invention. The burning sensation sliding down his throat and pooling in his stomach felt as though it were incinerating his turbulent emotions right along with it.
He opened the door and stepped out. Being on the upper floors of Northside Central Hospital, he could still see a vast stretch of the city skyline.
But the sky was bleak and overcast.
The distance was masked in a thick fog, blurring everything from view.
Silas took another sip, running his tongue over the roof of his mouth, his handsome features hardening into an icy, unreachable mask.
Thinking of something else, a faintly mocking smirk curved the corner of his lips.
He finished the glass of whiskey.
Then he turned and went back inside.
The woman on the hospital bed was tossing fitfully, her brows drawn together in a slight frown. One of her hands, with its pale, elegant fingers, was pressing down on the blanket.
This woman was a walking mystery, as seductive as she was dangerous.
On the surface, she appeared to be an unloved daughter from a mid-tier wealthy family, but was she actually afraid of them?
Hardly.
With one simple scheme, she had snatched the company she wanted and conned Dominic Fairchild out of a massive fortune.
If she were truly an outcast, Dominic would never have let it go so easily.
Yet not only had she walked away completely unscathed, but Dominic hadn’t even dared to show his face to retaliate since.
He was likely still struggling to figure out an excuse to move against her.
For a woman like that, her upbringing couldn’t possibly be ordinary. At the very least, there had to be more to it than just being ‘shipped off abroad for school.’ And yet, those years she spent overseas were virtually a blank slate. Who had the power to wipe her past entirely clean?
Looking at the woman’s flawlessly delicate face, Silas narrowed his eyes slightly. The caller ID from that text message flashed in his mind-
Vincent Vaughan.
His eyes grew pitch black as he pulled out his phone.

Chapter 280
His fingers flew across the screen, quickly typing out a message: [Look into Vincent Vaughan. I want his complete file, and I want to know exactly what his relationship with Vivian Fairchild is.]
Two seconds later, the reply came through.
[Understood. Give me two days.]
With Vivian asleep, the only illumination in the room came from a very faint nightlight. The dim, murky shadows cast over the man’s figure, leaving him half in the light and half swallowed by the dark.
The night passed both quickly and agonizingly slowly.
For the one sleeping, it was nothing more than the blink of an eye.
But for the one standing watch over a patient, every second dragged on.
Vivian’s fever spiked two more times that night. As dawn approached, she began to shiver uncontrollably, a fine layer of sweat beading across her forehead.
“Mom… Mom…”
“No… please, don’t!”
“Get away!”
Broken, raspy cries tumbled from her lips.
Silas’s brow furrowed tightly. He instinctively reached out and grabbed her hand, calling out in a low voice, “Vivian? Wake up, it’s just a dream. Don’t be afraid.”
Vivian had completely lost consciousness by now. She shook her head weakly, her tangled hair plastered to her skin by sweat, looking as fragile as shattered porcelain.
“Don’t go…”
