Chapter 292
“Silas…” Vivian called out softly. Her pale face looked heartbreakingly fragile, carrying an
unspeakable hesitation, as if the words had circled in her mind a thousand times but refused to leave her lips.
She clenched her hands, her gaze lowered.
“Vincent and Marcus are both my cousins. I also have a cousin, their biological sister, named Erin Vaughan.”
She and Erin had never met, so they weren’t close.
“The Vaughan family does have some influence in Bayport, but it’s so far away. I’ve never been there, and I’m not close to them.”
As she spoke, Vivian glanced up at the man. His expression was unreadable, betraying neither joy nor
anger.
“I didn’t tell you simply because I don’t consider myself a part of their family. What good would it do to bring it up? Keeping quiet saves a lot of trouble.”
After all, as long as they had been together, he only knew her as the heiress of the Fairchild family.
“If you aren’t close, why did both of them come looking for you?”
First Vincent.
Then Marcus.
The two of them had appeared one after another, as if they had planned it.
Vivian pouted slightly. “You must know Vincent’s background by now. He’s a diplomat. Maybe he just has this innate sense of grand morality? He always felt he owed me and wanted me to return to the Vaughan family. As for Marcus…”
She let out a soft sigh.
“When Dominic sent me abroad, he barely looked after me. Marcus was the one who helped me a lot.”
But his help always came with conditions.
At first, Vivian hadn’t thought much of it.
By the time she realized he was bad news, it was too late.
That was how the world worked.
To gain, one had to pay a price.
Nothing was freely given, not even among family. Everything boiled down to an equal exchange of value.
They gave her what she wanted because she possessed something they desired.
Silas stared at her with deep, dark eyes, taking in her breathtakingly beautiful face. The faint sorrow she exuded at that moment made a person instinctively believe her, instinctively want to protect her.

Chapter 292
His breathing grew slightly heavier. “So what did he want when he took you today?”
“To collect on my debt, naturally.”
Vivian offered a helpless smile. “Years ago, he told me I had to help him find someone.”
“Where is this person?”
“Dead.”
Her fingers twitched before she finally reached out, resting her hand over his and giving it a tentative squeeze. “You can look into all of this. I wasn’t trying to hide it from you. Marcus is… not a good person. I didn’t want you clashing with him.”
Her last sentence was laced with genuine concern.
Silas glanced down at their joined hands, his tone impassive. “Listening to you, it seems you were terrified of me getting hurt.”
*It seems.*
Those two words carried a lot of weight.
