Chapter 308
His mother’s voice droned on through the receiver. Silas closed his eyes and pulled the phone away from his ear. After two minutes, he brought it back.
“Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes.”
He responded calmly, his tone completely even. “She will meet your expectations.”
“Good.” Cynthia took a breath, adjusting her face mask in the reflection of the mirror. “Silas, I trust that you know what you’re doing. Don’t disappoint me.”
With that, she hung up, sounding more like an executive dismissing a subordinate.
Silas stared at the screen for two seconds before getting out of the car.
Up on the second floor, Vivian was leaning against the sofa, scrolling through the news. The reports about the flu from a few days ago had completely disappeared from the headlines.
There wasn’t much on the financial channels, mostly just updates on the development and renovation of remote areas. Yet hidden beneath those seemingly bland statements were business opportunities that had many entrepreneurs itching to make a move.
When Silas walked in, she instinctively looked up.
Tossing her iPad aside, she got up and walked over to him.
“Why are you just getting back? I was waiting for you to eat.”
His eyes flickered slightly, locking onto her face with an intense gaze. “What did you have?” he asked softly.
“Martha made roasted eggplant, pot roast, clam chowder, roasted chicken, and vegetables,” Vivian listed, counting them off on her fingers. She finished with a soft sigh. “I barely ate any
of it. What a waste.”
“No chicken noodle soup?”
“Uh…”
Why were they suddenly talking about specific dishes?
“Do you want some? If you do, I can have Martha make it tomorrow. Or I could learn how to make it and cook it for you. How does that sound?”
Her face was completely bare of makeup and no longer pale from being sick. Her skin was so radiant and luminous that it practically glowed, and her lips were a healthy, natural pink.
Vivian hooked her arm through his, pulling him toward the sofa. “Where did you eat tonight?

What did you have?”
“Interrogating me?”
“Just caring about you.”
As soon as he sat on the sofa, her soft body pressed against him. She rubbed her cheek up his shoulder like an affectionate cat.
But how much of this act was real and how much was fake couldn’t stand up to scrutiny.
Silas watched her out of the corner of his eye, remaining silent.
“Don’t look at me like that.”
Vivian burst into laughter and reached up to cup his face, an incredibly intimate gesture. “You’re making me feel like I did something wrong. Next time, I’ll just wait to eat with you, okay? I’ll wait even if I starve to death.”
Her hands had finally lost their icy chill. The warm touch against his skin, gentle as it was, sent a tingling sensation through him.
They were so close their breaths mingled.
She effortlessly controlled the charged, seductive tension.
Her eyes sparkled with amusement as she gazed at him. Her gaze slowly traced over his features before settling on his lips.
So close.
Even closer.
As if she was going to kiss him in the next second.
Her lips were naturally red and beautifully shaped, full and flushed with an intoxicating allure.
Silas stared at her indifferently, completely unmoved.
If he wasn’t going to move, she would.
