The Stand-In Who Burned the Script novel Chapter 37

Ever since Vivian suggested the breakup, Jonah seemed to have vanished off the face of the earth. He hadn't been home, nor had he called.

But surprisingly, he had multiple gifts delivered to her all in one day.

Flowers, jewelry, designer bags.

He genuinely felt like a repentant boyfriend trying to make amends.

Seeing this, her colleagues at the office couldn't help but sigh in envy. "Ms. Fairchild, it looks like Dr. Granger really is head over heels for you. Three years together and he's still planning surprises like this!"

"Seriously, when is the wedding?"

"Why don't you have the ceremony before we move to Northside? That way everyone can attend!"

As the teasing echoed around her, Vivian just smiled. "I'll let you all know the second there's good news, but it definitely won't be anytime soon."

And it definitely wouldn't be with that man.

She calmly gathered everything up and carried it back to her office.

"Boss." Zoe walked in holding an envelope. "An invitation to Caldwell Group's reception. It's tonight. Are you going?"

Vivian glanced at it.

"Why not?"

She had nothing better to do anyway.

Caldwell Group was one of the top corporations in Southampton. Events like this were highly formal affairs; she certainly couldn't go in her work clothes.

Zoe dug a black slip dress out of the lounge closet. "Boss, isn't this... a bit too plain?"

The black gown was entirely devoid of embellishments. It relied entirely on the wearer's figure to make a statement.

Vivian rubbed her chin, walked over, and pinched the hem of the dress.

The fabric was thin, but the texture felt incredible.

"Plain, but workable."

One of the gifts Jonah sent that afternoon included a necklace that would pair with it perfectly.

When she stepped out after changing, even someone as stoic as Zoe couldn't help but stare. "Boss."

Vivian smiled faintly. "Let's go."

The Caldwell reception was held at Southampton's most luxurious hotel.

At seven o'clock, Vivian's car pulled up to the entrance.

A security guard rushed forward to open her door.

The moment the woman stepped out in her high heels, the people nearby seemed to sense the shift in the air, their eyes naturally drawn to her.

Above her delicate ankles was an utterly minimalist slip dress that hugged her stunning curves to perfection. The designer necklace resting against her collarbone elegantly accentuated her slender neck, making her look flawlessly poised.

As she walked, the mermaid hem of her dress swayed with every step, radiating boundless allure.

The air seemed to freeze for two seconds before low whispers rippled through the crowd.

"Which family's heiress is that? I don't think I've ever seen her before."

"Right... With that aura and figure, she puts those Hollywood actresses to shame!"

"Wait..."

Someone murmured softly, "Isn't that the eldest Miss Fairchild?"

Right then, a socialite recognized her and walked over with a bright smile. "Vivian, you made it! My goodness, it's been so long, you look so gorgeous I can hardly take my eyes off you!"

Vivian smiled warmly. "You're too kind. Arthur sent a personal invitation, so of course I had to come."

Mrs. Prescott exchanged a few more pleasantries before her eyes suddenly locked onto Vivian's neck.
