The Stand-In Who Burned the Script novel Chapter 42

No matter how good a mechanical heart valve was, once a rejection reaction occurred, it was irreversible.

Vivian locked eyes with the man in front of her, her face a mask of indifference. After a long pause, she finally said, "Alright, I believe you."

Jonah squeezed her hand tightly, his tone gentle. "Then promise me you won't give Amara a hard time anymore. After all, I promised your father I'd help take care of her. It puts me in a really awkward position when you act like this, you know?"

Vivian gave an absentminded hum of agreement.

"Are you done? If you're done, I'm leaving. I'm tired."

Jonah had wanted to say more, but seeing the flush on her cheeks, he guessed she had had quite a bit to drink.

He lowered his brow. "Wait here for a bit. I'll drop Amara off and then take you home."

Vivian smiled. "Sure, go find her. I'll just get some fresh air."

As if she would actually wait for him.

The moment the man stepped back inside, Vivian slipped away.

Once outside, she sent Zoe a text message, then headed back to the car, closing her eyes to rest while she waited.

A few minutes later, Zoe said her goodbyes to the Caldwells and strode out.

Approaching the car, she glanced up and saw the woman in the passenger seat with one hand resting across her forehead. Her eyes were closed, her hair cascading naturally over her shoulders, exuding a faint sense of exhaustion.

With everything that had been happening lately, her boss...

Had endured far too much.

Zoe pressed her lips together and walked around the hood to get in.

Just as the engine roared to life, the woman's soft voice drifted over from the passenger seat. "Did Amara do anything else after we left?"

"No." Zoe turned to look at her. The beautiful woman still had her eyes closed. "A few onlookers went over to comfort her, giving her the perfect opening to steer the conversation toward Northside's crown prince. Now everyone thinks he's secretly in love with her and that she's the only one for him."

Vivian opened her eyes and actually let out a laugh.

"Well, it's the truth."

Jonah had done so much for her; they were practically at the finish line.

The plan was that once the heart surgery in Switzerland was complete, they could go off and live happily ever after. As for Vivian... she was nothing more than a stepping stone. No one cared if she lived or died.
