Since she put it that way, Vivian couldn't exactly argue back.
She politely wished her goodnight.
She walked back upstairs through the front door. Her casual, completely unfazed demeanor made it look as though she had merely 'accidentally' tumbled out the window and was just heading back to bed like nothing had happened.
The next morning, Jade arrived at her door precisely at seven to wake her up.
Fortunately, Vivian wasn't the type to sleep in anyway, so she got ready quickly.
Opening the door, she waved her hand in greeting. "Morning, Jade."
A muscle ticked in the corner of Jade's mouth. "Miss Fairchild, I suggest you call me Housekeeper. Madam likely wouldn't appreciate hearing such an informal title."
"Got it, Jade."
As they headed downstairs together, Vivian whispered, "What's Madam's mood like today?"
"The first rule of our job is to never blindly speculate on our employer's mood."
"..."
She really was like a robot.
However, she had to admit that the Sterling family's method of training their staff was highly efficient and practically error-proof.
By the time they reached the dining room, Cynthia was already seated with perfect posture. Her makeup was flawless, and her hair was impeccably styled as always. But today, she wore a little extra adornment: an intricately carved luminous hairpin.
When she wasn't speaking, Cynthia was arguably the most elegant woman Vivian had ever encountered. She almost didn't look like a real person, resembling an aristocratic lady stepped straight out of a vintage painting.
She made absolutely no sound while eating or sipping her soup, taking delicate, tiny bites that were a picture of refined grace.
"Morning, Mom."
Vivian offered a gentle greeting as a polite formality.
Cynthia merely flicked her eyes up at her. "Sit."
Then she unhurriedly went back to sipping her bowl of soup.
[You don't need to go into the office for the next two days while you're staying there. I already checked with your assistant; there's no urgent work that requires your presence. If there is an emergency, she can contact me.]
Was this...
Supposed to be considerate, or was it a hostage situation?
But it only took Vivian a moment to realize that Silas's arrangement was neither of those things. It was purely to avoid unnecessary conflict.
Cynthia already despised her company. If she insisted on going to work while living under her roof, it would inevitably trigger another round of endless harassment.
It was better to just stay put and deal with whatever Cynthia threw at her as it came.
Just as she put her phone away, Jade approached to remind her to accompany Cynthia for a walk, citing that a post-meal stroll was good for longevity.
After a breakfast of watery oatmeal, she highly doubted there was any longevity left to preserve.
And the rest of the day completely shattered Vivian's understanding of Cynthia.
She might look like a modern, sophisticated woman, but every single one of her habits was incredibly... archaic.
