For the next two days, Vivian's life was a carbon copy of the first. The lifestyle was healthy to the point of being sadistic. Her diet consisted entirely of bland, vegetarian dishes, with barely a drop of oil in sight, let alone an ounce of meat.
As evening rolled around again, Vivian stared at the dining table and let out a long sigh.
She seriously couldn't take this anymore.
"My dearest Cynthia..."
She looked up with resentful eyes, her voice soft and pleading. "I want meat. Can we please have just a little bit of protein?"
Cynthia shot her a cold glance. "You don't want to eat this?"
"...I really just don't have the appetite for it."
"Judith."
Cynthia turned her head and ordered coolly, "Since Vivian doesn't have an appetite, clear all these dishes away."
Before Vivian could even react, Judith had the maids sweep everything off the table.
Maintaining a respectful expression, Judith walked over to Vivian. "Vivian, Ms. Gifford says you've had a long day and should head back to rest early."
In other words, if she didn't want the vegetarian scraps, she got nothing at all.
Vivian looked in the direction Cynthia had left and let out a breathy laugh of disbelief.
"Is she out of her mind?"
"Watch your words, Vivian."
Judith's brow furrowed deeply. In the few days Vivian had been here, this was the first time the housekeeper openly expressed her displeasure. "Ms. Gifford is a compassionate woman. Every year, she dedicates a period of time to a strict vegetarian diet and spiritual reflection. She maintains this even abroad. Since you came to live and dine with her, you must respect her habits."
Vivian had absolutely no issue with people who had religious beliefs.
But was Cynthia really practicing spiritual reflection?
This was clearly a targeted attack on her.
She pressed her lips together. "Well, she certainly has the heart of a saint. I just wonder if the gods back home can even hear her prayers from overseas?"
"Vivian..."
Judith's eyes darkened instantly. "Please watch how you speak. If you truly enrage Ms. Gifford, I'm afraid your punishment won't be this simple."
Vivian pressed her lips into a thin line and stayed quiet.
She knew there was no point in arguing with Judith.
The real problem was Cynthia. She looked so glamorous and put-together on the outside, but underneath, she was a deeply twisted, bizarre woman.
Judith even stationed two bodyguards beside Vivian as she stood in the drafty hall.
After an entire night on her feet in the freezing cold, her legs had completely lost sensation.
The early winter night had been brutally frigid.
Wearing only a thin layer of clothing, Vivian had developed a fever by the early hours of the morning.
When the bodyguards finally let her go at daybreak, she swayed dizzily with every step.
Returning to the main hall, she found Cynthia sitting elegantly, sipping tea. As soon as Cynthia looked up, she was met with Vivian's piercing, resentful glare.
