Silas paused for a second before pulling down his mask.
"Wow."
He was being unbelievably compliant today.
Vivian's eyes sparkled. The way she stared at him was no different from a totally smitten fangirl.
She just kept her eyes locked on his stoic face, not even blinking.
After a long moment, Silas set the water cup aside and grabbed a thermometer to check her temperature. It read 99.1 degrees—still a low-grade fever.
Frowning, he sat back down on the edge of the bed. "You're going to need to rest for a while. Behave and stop tossing around."
Vivian completely ignored his instruction. Instead, she reached out, grabbed his hand, and aggressively forced her fingers to interlock with his.
Her body was still running hot, and the intense heat instantly transferred to his skin.
It was scorching, yet incredibly soft.
"It's so weird. Your mother tortured me half to death, but the second I look at your face, I can't even stay mad at you."
Silas stared at their intertwined hands, letting her play with his fingers as she pleased.
His voice was flat. "Maybe we should have the doctors scan your brain while you're here."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
Vivian pinched his fingertips. "I'm confessing my feelings to you, and you think I have brain damage?"
"It's hard to rule it out."
"Well, if that's how you're going to be, the second I'm cured, I'm going to stop liking you."
Silas's fingers suddenly tightened around hers, his lowered gaze turning dangerously dark.
Vivian fell silent. A strange, suffocating tension immediately settled over the room, carrying an indescribably heavy weight.
About a minute passed.
She wiggled closer to the edge of the bed. "Come closer."
Silas looked up slightly, his deep eyes reflecting her pale face. His voice dropped an octave. "What are you doing?"
"I want you to hold me."
Vivian gave him puppy-dog eyes. "Don't you think I look completely pathetic right now?"
Vivian sniffled and shot him a deeply resentful look.
She lowered her eyes and stayed quiet.
She already possessed stunning, radiant features, and paired with this vulnerable, wordless expression, it hit the man's absolute weak spot like a soft, unexpected breeze.
A helpless look crossed Silas's eyes. He lowered his voice, "I know you've been through a lot. Isn't that why I'm indulging you?"
"Then kiss me."
The man lowered his head and pressed his lips to hers.
Vivian let out a soft huff. "You massive hypocrite. You didn't even like me before, but now, because of what your mother did, you're suddenly willing to kiss me?"
Silas raised an eyebrow. "I'm a man."
"So what?"
"Men generally don't turn down what's offered right to them."
Vivian froze, then ground her teeth. "Well, aren't you just a model citizen!"
She closed her eyes in a huff, completely missing the faint, upward curve of the man's lips.
