Silas stayed at the hospital with Vivian for two days, but his corporate workload had piled up aggressively, and several high-stakes matters required his physical presence.
Seeing that her condition was stabilizing, he headed back to the office.
As he stepped out, Simon was waiting by the door with two bodyguards.
Silas gave them a strict directive. "If anything happens, notify me immediately."
"Understood."
But barely an hour after he left, Cynthia showed up.
She stared at the pale woman in the hospital bed, her voice dripping with ice. "Are you satisfied with this mess now?"
Vivian met her gaze calmly. "What exactly am I supposed to be satisfied about?"
"Your pathetic pity play. Silas actually bought it!"
Vivian honestly didn't know what kind of facial expression to make. She forced a tired smile and said, "Ms. Gifford, me falling violently ill and you locking me in a freezing room are both verifiable facts. How exactly is that a pity play?"
Ms. Gifford again.
From the very first time they met, this woman had addressed her that way.
And the next time she heard it, it had come from her own son.
Cynthia's lips trembled slightly. "So you're saying this is my fault?"
"I didn't say that."
"You didn't say it, but my son is now completely alienated from me because of it. This is entirely your doing."
Cynthia's glare was vicious, radiating an intense, freezing hostility. Vivian really wanted to point out that her strained relationship with her son had nothing to do with her, and everything to do with Cynthia being a complete psychopath.
But her instincts warned her that speaking up would trigger World War III, so she kept her mouth shut.
Cynthia didn't push for an answer. She crossed her arms elegantly over her chest. "Since this was my oversight, I am obviously going to take responsibility. Get up. We're going back to Rosewood Manor, and I will personally oversee your recovery."
"...That won't be necessary."
They were completely different things, weren't they?
Vivian was utterly baffled, temporarily at a loss for words.
Cynthia had no interest in casual conversation anyway. She ordered coldly, "Remember what I said. Stay put and behave, or I will make Silas divorce you."
With that, she spun on her heel and left, swapping out with Judith.
Judith gave a respectful nod as a greeting.
"Vivian, you shouldn't have spoken to Ms. Gifford that way... It's already a massive wound in her heart that Mr. Sterling refuses to be close to her."
"Didn't she bring that on herself?" Vivian glanced at the door before her eyes drifted back to Judith's face. "Judith, you seem far more reasonable than she is. You must know I wasn't just spinning lies to upset her."
Judith pressed her lips tightly together, her deep frown suggesting she was harboring an impossible secret.
In the end, she didn't say a word about it, only letting out a heavy sigh.
"Perhaps you'll understand in the future, Vivian."
