Silas's eyes remained devoid of emotion. "Judith, there's no need to use these excuses to brush me off. Whether she's recovered or not, I will see her today."
"Mr. Sterling..."
Judith sighed. "Didn't you already promise Madam?"
"Letting her stay here and me wanting to see her aren't mutually exclusive."
That... seemed to make sense.
Judith pressed her lips together in silence for a few seconds before stepping aside.
When Silas walked into Vivian's room, she was leaning against the headboard, holding an ancient gaming console, completely engrossed in playing... Tetris.
Her complexion was still a bit pale, but the sickly look from yesterday was gone.
He stood in the doorway, pinching the bridge of his nose. After a long moment, he finally walked over.
"Are you better now?"
"Huh?"
Vivian glanced up at him before quickly shifting her focus back to her game.
Her voice rang with delight. "Why are you here?"
"To see if you died from your sickness."
"..."
Vivian paused. The blocks on her screen stacked to the very top, and after a series of winding 8-bit sound effects, the game ended.
Tossing the console aside, she mumbled as she opened her arms. "You obviously came because you were worried about me. Can't you just say something nice? Hug me."
A flicker of emotion crossed Silas's eyes. Sitting on the edge of the bed, he pulled her into his arms. His hand naturally moved to rest against her forehead. Her temperature felt completely normal.
"Did they make things difficult for you?"
"Do you mean your mom?"
"Hmm?"
"Our mom!"
Vivian quickly corrected herself, peeking up at him. "She didn't make things difficult at all. She said she brought me back here to take care of me, and so far... it actually feels like she is."
"Besides, who trips and falls in the exact same spot twice? I was considerate before because she's your mother, so I had to give her some face. I couldn't exactly bully her back."
The relationship between a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law was a universally difficult puzzle to solve.
It was just that Cynthia was far more overbearing and difficult to deal with than the average mother-in-law.
Silas's deep gaze settled on the top of her head. His tone gave away nothing. "Hearing you say that, you really are an understanding and perfect daughter-in-law."
"Of course I am," Vivian wrinkled her nose proudly. "I am absolutely determined to turn the wicked mother-in-law from the stories into my biggest fan."
Silas smiled faintly but didn't say anything else.
In less than three days, Simon should have some news.
If there really was something suspicious about Vivian's mother's death, then... all of her recent actions could easily be explained.
If it had been any other woman facing such a fiercely hostile mother-in-law, she would have thrown massive tantrums or played the victim. But Vivian, despite her dramatic antics, only spoke of understanding and actively threw herself into the older woman's path.
Such abnormal behavior couldn't simply be for his sake alone.
At that thought, Silas's dark eyes abruptly sank, becoming entirely unreadable.
