Upon returning home, Vivian skipped dinner and went straight upstairs to take a shower.
Every interaction with Dominic Fairchild left her mentally and physically exhausted. However, today was different from the past. If Dominic actually listened to her warnings, he would soon be forced to show his hand.
Stepping out of the bathroom, she curled up on the sofa. Under the soft ambient lighting, her stunning face carried an indescribable charm—a mix of weariness and languid grace.
She stayed in that position for a long time until footsteps approached the door.
"Mrs. Gable? Why haven't you left yet?"
Normally, once someone was home, Mrs. Gable would clock out for the night.
Mrs. Gable offered an apologetic smile. "Miss Fairchild, I saw you didn't eat dinner... and you seemed a bit upset, so I thought I'd wait until Mr. Sterling got back before heading out."
"Is he back?"
"Not yet."
"Then, is there something else?"
Mrs. Gable gasped as if suddenly remembering. "Ah, yes. You have a guest."
"..."
It was past ten o'clock at night. Who could it be?
Vivian set her stuffed bear aside and stood up, smoothing her hair. "I'll head down. You should go home, Mrs. Gable. It's late, so be careful on your way back."
"Alright."
Mrs. Gable nodded, untying her apron as she headed toward the stairs.
Vivian threw on a light cardigan and went downstairs. She paused when she saw the figure in the living room, then let out a scoffing laugh. "Are you a wandering ghost or something at this hour?"
The man stopped playing with the decorative figurine on the table and looked up.
"What, am I interrupting something?"
"What do you think?"
To be honest, Vivian didn't even want to engage with him.
If Silas suddenly came home and saw him here at this hour, he'd definitely throw a fit, and coaxing him back into a good mood was exhausting.
She crossed her arms and sat down on the sofa, shooting Liam Ziegler a sidelong glance. "State your business, or get the hell out."
Liam turned to face her, his gaze unreadable.
Perhaps the living room lights were too bright, but Vivian couldn't quite decipher the look in his eyes.
"If I was involved, why would I have helped you?"
It was a valid point.
Although Vivian hadn't directly intervened, if it hadn't been for her that night, Liam wouldn't have shaken those guys off so easily.
Liam furrowed his brows, searching her face for any other cracks in her facade.
There were none.
Her nonchalant expression was like an impenetrable mask, perfectly plastered across her features.
"Since you say you weren't involved, I'll believe you." After all, just as she said, the incident was years in the past. Even if she had orchestrated it, he wasn't going to hold it against her now.
"But Vivian."
Liam suddenly leaned in, his face mere inches from hers.
In that split second, Vivian's heart gave an involuntary jolt. Was this lunatic actually going to try something right here? If Silas saw this, he would completely detonate.
But he stopped.
His dark, low voice carried a hypnotic, seductive edge. "If I find out you approached Silas with an ulterior motive—and that your motive might end up hurting him—I won't sit idly by."
